If you’ve ever had a dog, at some point you’ve received a “reminder” after a letter from your vet saying that your dog should have had an annual rabies shot. Most states and counties have ordinances requiring annual rabies vaccinations.
Over the past ten years or so, researchers have been testing how long vaccines last. And, it looks like we’ve been over dosing our care. The discovery shows that one rabies vaccine can provide immunity for “proven” seven years, possibly even for the lifetime of a dog. . I heard this for the first time a year ago, and I did not give any of the rabies shot my annual care, since, like the “core” vaccine. Everyone is healthy and happy. Today, most professionals accept the findings, as demonstrated in The American Animal Hospital Association 2006 Canine Vaccine Guidelines.
He advises that “there is no scientific basis for the recommendation to revaccinate dogs annually when the current vaccine provides years of immunity.” Other research shows that revaccinating the vaccine after seven years or more does not increase your dog’s immunity to that disease. Ask someone who works there or a friend with care if you’re not sure, the box is usually clear as to what it’s for. However, if you are not comfortable giving your dog a shot, get another vet who can or go. You don’t want a toy needle to hurt your dog.
