Junonia has expanded its collection in this year, and its fall fashion line now includes a modest collection of plus size career wear. If you can get past the hideous batik outfit that they chose for their catalog cover, this is a welcome change, with a caveat. It’s 2007 and Junonia still hasn’t gotten the memo that pleated pants are the worst possible thing you can do to a plus size figure. Then again, maybe it’s plus size women who haven’t gotten the memo, because Junonia claims that it’s double-pleat pant is a best seller!
Plus Size Pants
Luckily, there are some flat front plus size pants available. This autumn, when dressing for success, choose the Junonia stretch twill five-pocket pant, which can take you from the office to brunch on the weekend. Another great option is Junonia’s flat front wool blend trouser. These slacks are expensive, but fully lined and available in petite, average and tall.
Plus Size Jackets
Any of the aforementioned slacks should pair nicely with a standout in Junonia’s fall fashion line: the empire waist blazer. In spite of the figure-flattering benefits of structured jackets, many plus size women tend to object to the added bulk. Junonia solves the problem by adding a hint of spandex to the fabric for ease of movement and a lighter feel. The added tailoring is also sure to give a fit that is closer to the body for larger chested women. The classic blazer in olive and khaki tweed also looks promising, but the slit pockets ruin the seams. A tailor can sew those pockets shut for just a few bucks, but a persuasive argument can be made that women shouldn’t have to pay $90 for a plus size blazer that still needs to be tailored.
Plus Size Shoes
Junonia’s emphasis has always been on comfort–the question is whether or not they can pair that comfort with style. The Clark’s Nicola shoe is a nice compromise in that respect. It amounts to a work-appropriate leather flat that has enough support for every day wear. Another option with the same idea is the Junonia’s Spangle shoe in nubuck leather. They are Clark’s answer to the wildly popular Skechers Mary Jane’s and look as if they’re better made.
Plus Size Sleepwear
Junonia offers an adorable pair of plaid pajamas this fall, just in time for the holidays. These smooth broadcloth pajamas have patch pockets and piped edging. They’re also machine washable.
Plus Size Activewear
Junonia specializes in plus size activewear and they offer some of the most thoughtful garments for sporty women. The no-chafe boxers wick away moisture to keep you dry and can be worn under any skirt of your choice. And when it comes to plus size sports bras, Junonia doesn’t mess around. Check out their “serious” motion control bra.
Additionally, Junonia offers an entire plus size travel collection. The zip-off jacket and convertible pant aren’t much to look at–we question the wisdom of placing bulky pockets and attention-grabbing horizontal seams right across the thighs–but they do look like they could be extremely useful garments for hiking trips.
Overall
Steer clear of Junonia’s denim offerings this fall–they range from country kitsch to slovenly sacks. Also their dresses are shapeless and boxy. However, as always, Junonia’s plus size swimwear collection is at the top of the industry. Moreover, their yoga and workout clothes will make you the envy of all other women at the gym. But when it comes to wedding comfort with fashion, Junonia’s fall fashion line proves that they still have a long way to go.
