Kids with ADD and ADHD: A New Generation of Gifted Children Called “Indigos”

Every year, thousands of children are diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). These children are often prescribed stimulant medication, such as Ritalin, to keep them engaged in school and daily activities. According to Drug Effects Administration, prescriptions for stimulant drugs have grown five percent since 1991. Many children , who are diagnosed with ADD or ADHD, do not fully meet the criteria for the disorder and this leads many to believe that doctors often put children on Ritalin as a surefire solution. (Dunne) In fact, some researchers think that these so-called “troubled children” are a new generation of the most excellent children, who are called indigos.

This new generation of gifted children has become known as indigo because they are believed to have an indigo blue chakra color. . This color chakra is the energy field of the organism and can be seen with a special camera or by someone who has trained to see. When light moves slowly, it produces warm colors and cool colors moves at a faster rate. The color of the Indian chakra is characterized by spiritually conscious and often famous people. (Vi, 7-8) An Indian can be recognized by having certain personalities and tending to the right minds. (Vi, 97-98).

Most of the Indians are said to be very strong, strong-willed and daring, and tend to do as they please. Indigo children are very creative in the arts and have a formal way of designing, using colors; and composing music and poetry. Indigos are very intuitive and are very good at reading the body and other forms of communication. Indian children lack excitement and generally lose patience with those who are not out of the box thinkers that many of them have been diagnosed with ADD or ADHD. (Virtue, 6.) While many people are diagnosed with ADHD, not all will be diagnosed this way, and certainly not all ADHD children are diagnosed.

Children who are diagnosed with ADHD have shown a close relationship with their gifted children in many ways. Many children with ADHD show a high IQ level and are good at solving simple problems. As mentioned above, these children are also very creative and have the ability to create beautiful music and art. Experts say that the only difference between a gifted and an ADHD child is that the gifted child starts the projects; With ADHD children leave projects unfinished.” (Virtue, 3.) Indian children generally know that they are really different and don’t feel normal at school or among their peers. For this reason, Indian children isolate themselves from the rest of the world, feeling that no one understands them. Many Indian children feel so different and disconnected from the rest of the world that they become destructive. These children at school constantly report that they are otherwise negative and distrustful of their ability to learn and perform in school. (Vir. 4-5) Instead of learning to help these children in the way that best suits them, unwitting teachers are often frustrated and neglect or punish them.

In today’s society, these children diagnosed with ADD or ADHD are often placed on medication to help them focus and function in everyday life. Many believe that drugs are not the answer for these children and cover up the problem rather than address it directly. A wide variety of things can be done that dramatically improve the performance of children in ADHD/ADD education. Since most of these children are dominated by the right side of the brain, which is the visual center of the brain, visual aids are a great help in education. By using images, colors, and videos, visual learners could learn much better. Children with ADHD/AD require greater stimulation than other children and generally enjoy doing things kinesthetically. Teachers could use active learning techniques, allowing the child to interact with the materials with their hands as they search for them. One of the reasons children usually do well in art classes is because they are allowed to interact and create while they learn. . (Vi, 171-179).

Perhaps the most emotional way is to teach these children how to strive and achieve without limiting their creativity or making them rely on drugs through behavior modification. Behavior modification is a technique for modifying undesirable behaviors and replacing them with more desirable behaviors. This technique can be very useful in teaching children to focus and build confidence especially if started at an early age. The most effective type of behavior modification that can be applied in almost any situation is called the economy of information. An economy ticket would probably be the most effective for a child with ADD or ADHD at school. The teacher chooses some kind of reward such as a sign on a poker chip or a gold star. When the child listens actively, is placed in the classroom, and is still sitting, the teacher gives the child a token reward. When the child has accumulated a certain amount of these tokens, he can then exchange them for the child’s toy or candy. Behavior modification not only teaches a child how to focus on hanging out without drugs, but it can be applied not only in the classroom, but anywhere. Parents can easily use the same technique to help their child complete homework, study, or simply complete tasks in general. (Ciccarelli & Meyer, 190, 570-572)

ADHD/ADD symptoms can be greatly affected by exercise and nutrition. Reducing sugar and caffeine can dramatically improve a child with ADHD/AD’s ability to focus. Having a balanced diet will allow energy to be released at a slow rate than in energy activities from weathering food With additives. Some researchers believe that symptoms from hypoglycemia are often mistaken for ADHD. Hypoglycemia means having low blood sugar flat and those with hypoglycemia become irritable, agitated, angry, and have difficulty concentrating. By applying behavioral therapies such as teaching breathing, relaxation, nutrition, and especially behavior modification, these children can increase their sense of well-being and value and therefore become a positive contribution to society.
