Last Comic Standing is a reality show on NBC that originally aired in 2003 and was produced by Peter Engel. In the show, comedians go through an audition where they do a small scene. If they make it through, they get a callback to another, bigger, exercise before a live audience. The semi-finalists who are selected for the callback are divided into two groups and practice their skills against each other. The studio audience votes for their favorites and those who make it to the “home” enter. When at home, the comedians must participate in weekly challenges, such as skills in a laundromat or working as a tour guide< /a> in Los Angeles.
The winner of the challenge gets immunity for a week as the housemates go into the video booth and declare who they think is the funniest. After watching these video clips together, the comedian with the most votes picks one person to fight against in the head challenge. These then work for the audience’s interest, and again, the audience’s votes are rewarded for it. The comedian returns home after losing. They do this until only five contestants remain. After it’s down to five, the audience at home gets to vote for their favorite comedian each week. They vote one by one until there is only one “Last Comic Stand”.
The first season of Last Comic Standing was hosted by comedian Jay Mohr. He introduced us to comedians, Ralphie Maius, Rich Vossius, and of course the last comedian standing, Dat Phan. We were also introduced to Buck Star, who was constantly seen on audition shows, followed by talent scouts, Mark Ross and Bob Read around the country. He began each of his shows with a catchy line growing up, “Way to see the Buck Stars!” The season brought two names as Alonzo Bodden, who sat on the famous judge, Gary Gulman, and the winner, John Heffron. Buck Star kept showing up for auditions, and finally gave him a callback.
but he did not obtain an audience, and was sent home. Season three started after season two. He was considered one of the best comics from season one and season two.
