Earthworms are nasty critters that can inhabit your lawn and turn it from green to a hideous brown. Earthworms are critters that will inevitably damage your lawn if you don’t take care of the problem and other animals can dig into your lawn. If you think you have a worm problem there are many ways you can get rid of it and they are all quite easy.
The first thing you need to get rid of is the problem of worms, this is really the problem of having worms. If you see brown in your yard and the grass looks very spongy and soft, it’s worth it to look under the grass. When you pull up the grass and see little white insects that lay on the ground in a “C” shape, that’s when these are gnats and you know you have a worm problem. If you see more than eight worms in a certain location, then you should know to remove them as soon as possible to prevent further damage to the lawn. Most of the time we have a few of these worms in our area, but more than eight means you have a worm infestation.
Make sure to pick up the grass that is damaged by the worms. Take the grass that you removed from the grassy areas and roll it up and throw it in the trash. You will then need to cultivate or aerate the soil where the damage has occurred, this will help to bring the remaining mulch to the surface and help your soil remain healthy. If you see more beetles you should pick them up and kill them using a shovel or your foot to make sure they don’t infect your lawn anymore. Once you have aerated your disturbed lawn areas and other areas around your disturbed lawn you can use a pesticide as well. This pesticide should be specific to getting rid of roundworms, and something like Milky Spore. Carefully read the instructions for the pesticide regarding dosage instructions and how much to add per square foot damaged soil. It is usually about two teaspoons per square foot. If you have a large area that you have a worm problem, you can use a spreader to spread the worm insecticide around. The use of a pesticide to get rid of the worms should be done around June and only work on the smaller worms. If you have had a problem for a couple of years or you see a huge infestation of worms, you should call in a professional with the best chemicals and equipment.
When you have spread the pesticide around the affected area, then water the area to make sure the seeds go into the ground. This will help eradicate the worms by making the products penetrate deeper into the areas they inhabit. Products like Spore Milk do not require you to use water, but it is important to read the directions on the box to make sure you are using the correct method. You can repeat this process later in the year if you are still experiencing teething problems. As always, when using chemicals of any kind, make sure you use protective gloves and a mask. Products such as milky spores are not harmful and are the best products to get rid of worms because they do not cause harm to pets, humans or other insects. They try to get a safe and non-harmful product because these products are useful and even worms only go after worms. You can get products at your local improvement store or garden center to help you get rid of your worm problem and they cost about 20 dollars.
