Learn the ABCs: Free Online Alphabet Resources for Toddlers

If you have a toddler or pre-school aged child who loves the alphabet and is eager to learn more about the ABC’s, then check out some of these free online alphabet resources. This article highlights a few really great free websites that offer both online alphabet learning as well as printable ABC worksheets for your toddler.

Fisher-Price
“Learn Your ABC’s”
This activity teaches your child the alphabet by using the key board. Your toddler sits in your lap and presses the letter that they see displayed on screen.

This is a fun game with sound. At the end, your child can sing along as the alphabet song is played. The best part is that even if the child hits the wrong key on the keyboard, the game still continues to the next letter.

Fisher-Price
“Let’s Visit the ABC Zoo”
This game has versions for both infants and toddlers.

The infant game teaches the first letter of various zoo animal names. For example, “A” is used for alligator.

The toddler version starts with the alphabet song. Toddlers then press any letter on the keyboard to visit the corresponding ABC animal. The animal also makes a cute sound that will delight both the infants and the toddlers.

Learning Planet
“ABC Order”
This fun game is great for older toddlers as it requires a bit more interaction than the Fisher-Price games. Younger toddlers will still enjoy this game if they get a little help from an older sibling or a parent. If you do let younger toddlers play this game, they may get easily frustrated until they learn to manipulate the mouse to click on the correct letter.

This game uses green barrels to help teach children the correct alphabet order. The game will display 3 green barrels with 2 of the barrels having letters filled in automatically. The child then needs to choose the correct letter to fill in the blank. This game does have sound.

Note that this game is free. There are other games and resources on this site that are available with a paid subscription.

Learning Planet
“Help Rusty the Rat catch the falling letters”
When you click the Start link, you’ll help Rusty the Rat catch letters falling letters into a basket. This game teaches alphabet recognition, but does require the knowledge of how to use the arrow keys on the keypad. This game is great for older toddlers as it feels more like a video game. There is sound with this game.

Wholesome Toddler Food
Printable ABC Coloring Pages

This website has great printable coloring pages for every letter of the alphabet. The coloring pages featuring a blank capital letter plus an image that is associated with that letter. For example, the “A” page also contains an apple.

Bembo’s Zoo
Unique alphabet site that transforms letters into animals
Requires Flash.

The upper-case alphabet is displayed on your screen in a colorful, wavy-like motion. Have your toddler click on a letter and watch it transform into an animal using the alphabet. The animals have sound. This activity is sure to delight your child.

Starfall
ABC’s

This site displays the alphabet using graphics that look like wooden alphabet blocks. When you child clicks on one of the blocks, you’ll have a brief pause and then the upper-case and lower-case version of the letter will display. A voice announces the letters as they appear on the screen. Be sure that you click the green arrow at the bottom of each letter’s screen. The narrator will make the sound of the letter and an image using the letter will display. For example, the letter “E” will display elephants.

Younger children will enjoy coloring the letters and shapes on each page while older children will enjoy tracing and writing the actual letter shapes.
