During a recent trip to the Florida Keys, my friend stayed at the Hungry Pelican Motel in Key Largo, Florida. As we are college students, we were trying to make our trip as cheap as possible which is the main reason we chose this motel. While it was certainly not a 5-star hotel, it was adequate for our purposes. We were just looking for a place to sleep and didn’t need to spend a lot of time there.
The motel has 23 different rooms. They can sleep from one to four people. Some rooms include a kitchen but I heard they are not well equipped with plates and utensils for cooking so it is necessary. you don’t think you’re going to eat lunch there. Rooms range in price from $60 to $220 per night. This rate is for two people and there is an extra $10 for each extra person. Be careful not to be allowed to look into your room before paying for the night. I found this a little sketchy, but it was suitable for our room. The rooms were quite small and the beds were not comfortable but expected. They still slept in our car as we planned to do earlier.
The Hungry Pelican Motel is located on Key Largo right off Interstate 1. It is about an hour and a half drive from Miami International Airport. >. We chose this location because it is about halfway between Miami and Key West and we plan to go to both on our way. . It is easy to find that it is the right way but far enough to not hear the night traffic noise.
A nice feature of this motel is their free rental of canoes and kayaks. There was always a paddle we wanted to use with it, but there were plenty of kayaks for all. I’ve used this a couple of times, and we’ve taken it out to explore the coast. We brought our snorkels because there were some good places to jump and swim around. The water is clear enough for you to see what’s below you while you’re in the kayak to decide if it’s worth entering. There are boats and jet skis around though so you have to be careful. We heard one couple say that they had seen a manatee, and according to the owners, the dolphins often came around. More people have ever rescued a motel pier from tarpon, bony, and snooks. Appropriately named the motel, there are pelicans all over the place.
The free continental breakfast wasn’t that great, but there was juice, coffee, pastries and fruit. We tend to eat our fill and have enough to last the rest of the day, cutting back on our travel food.
Overall, I would recommend this motel to anyone looking for a cheap place to stay in the Keys. However, if you plan to spend a lot of time in a motel instead of exploring the islands, they suggest that you choose somewhere nicer.
