I couldn’t believe the lab report. We are very ugly. Even though I’m overweight, it runs in my family, I’m a pack day smoker and an annual couch potato; Indeed, I wonder. I’m not sure if I thought I’d quit, or if it really didn’t matter, but I didn’t pay attention until my brother died on heart attack at age 42. I realized it was time to listen. I imagined a world where I didn’t see my children grow up, get married, have kids of their own. The thought of not being there scared me into action .
The sentence was simple; quit smoking, be healthy and exercise. He rolled the tongue of the doctors as if he said it a million times a day. It probably does. Six simple words, yet they seemed so overwhelming. I took them one by one.
Quit smoking: I tried everything from patches, gum, candy, weaning, Chantix, and hypnosis, but in the end it was cold turkey that got me through. By far the smartest thing I did was quit smoking. It was hard, but death seemed ripe: so I did.
I quit smoking on Easter this year. It took about two months of being a non-smoker before I started working seriously on the diet end of things.
Diet: To lower cholesterol, the Mayo Clinic recommends a change to oil, more fruits and vegetables , egg whites, and more wheat. After researching what types of food I should be eating, I decided to try the Mediterranean diet. I like not so much dieting and food, but just a choice. cook cholesterol reducing foods are incorporated and are easy to follow.
Sometimes I switch from Mediterranean diets and diabetic diets. Although I am not diabetic, controlling my sugar intake gives me more energy throughout the day and chips and dip. .
After I stopped smoking and my food intake I decided to tackle exercise. I no longer need to exercise my cholesterol. My levels have returned to normal (as was my blood pressure), but sometime during the last few months it has been a journey of with overall health and not just a change in number.
Exercise: Years ago I went to the gym but it doesn’t appeal to me anymore. Instead of setting aside hours of the day to train, I decided to keep fit daily activities. I bought a metal detector and walked the tracks near my house. I went to the menagerie and took the puppy. Rain, snow, sleet or shine, get up and walk at least three times a day, because that’s another message. He also started a vegetable garden this summer. Gardening gets me exercising a few times a week and it also helps improve my diet.
I am not sick overnight, and there is no miracle cure. It’s a slow and steady process in reverse and I’m still working on it. This started about my cholesterol, but ended up being about my overall health. I really want to live a long and healthy life and quit smoking, eating healthy and exercising were the six words that they have departed from me.
