Every year we walked into our church four weeks before Christmas to be woken up to see the Advent wreath decorated with a brass column or hanging from the ceiling. The coming crown is a symbol of the beginning of the coming season. The wreath above, covered in greenery and adorned with four candles, sits flat rather than hanging on the wall. Four candles, three purple and one pink, are lit each week before the feast of Christmas until the feast of the Lord’s Christmas, until finally the purple candle to celebrate the birth of Jesus. This year for the first time we plan to have our Advent wreath in our home to celebrate Advent and celebrate it as a visible sign of reason at Christmas time. We were fortunate to be able to join several other families from our children’s school who were making the crowning experience.

Have fun as a family picking greens. We brought some blue spruce frames and other families brought boxwood, laurel, or holly. We also brought some sprigs of rosemary to add a little extra aromatherapy to our advent wreaths. After they are cut, you can allow your greens to sit in a container of water for several hours to get hydrated during their four weeks of service.
To assemble your vase, first place a floral wreath on your candles. Now to cover the greens, you can hide the candlesticks. Inside and outside and round and round the crown covers the whole. Add each myrtle to cover the last flower spike. Floral clips are really easy to work with. Even our seven year-olds won the crown of our green family.
But there are two good things. You can either add 3 purple candles and one pink candle and if those colors are not available or you have a good supply of white candles, you can use four candles and tie purple bows on three and one pink bow on the fourth.
To help keep your advent wreath fresh for four weeks, store it in the coolest area of your home and mist it with water every day. If you have a fridge freezer, this is the perfect place to store your adventuring when you’re not at that home enjoy, but unless your house is too hot and dry, most homemade advent wreaths will last until your birthday.
We rejoice in having our advent crowned at home, and lighting a candle every week at Christmas and in celebration of the birth of our Saviour. In the hustle and bustle of our Advent season, the wreath is a beautiful reminder of why we celebrate the season of Christmas.
