20th Century Fox has announced the release date for its reboot of its Marvel Universe franchise “Fantastic Four.” The comic book team known as Thea The First of the Marvel Family will hit theaters on March 6, 2015. With a director in place and a writer currently working on the script, the next step is to start casting the actors in place for this big project.
“Fantastic Four”
Created by Stan Lee in 1961, “Fantastic Four” was the first superhero team Lee created from Marvel Comics. The group consists of a pseudo-family unit, with Reed Richards, his best friend Ben Grimm, his future wife Sue Storm, and his younger brother Johnny Storm. They got their powers after exploring outer space when they passed through cosmic rays.
Reed became a fantastic Lord with the power to extend his body, Sue became an invisible woman, Johnny became the Human Torch and Ben covered the rock thing.
The team came to the big screen in 2005 under the leadership of director Tim Story, a film that was well seen but remained an average effort in the same year that “Batman Begins” changed what comic books could get movies. While it wasn’t a bad movie by any definition of the word, it wasn’t up to par with other comics of the time period.
The Creative Team
Mark Millar plans for Fox with his amazing projects. Millar helped create the Ultimate Universe as he closed the foundation for the surprise “Civil War” crossover event. With the help of an amazing writer to develop his projects, Fox hopes that he will try to strike the right balance of fantasy and mysterious office success that Mirar Studios has achieved with its projects.
Josh Trank, the director who helmed the original superhero movie “Chronicles” in 2012, has signed on for the new “Fantastic Four” movie, hoping to bring his unique flair to the project. Jeremy Slater, a writer who once worked as a film critic, signed on movie script, promising a superhero team that “deserves fans.”
Problems of the 2015 Release
One big danger sign in this whole plan is the 2015 release date. Marvel releases two movies a year, so any comic adaptation will be competing with Marvel movies. But 2015 is a big one. “Avengers 2” hit in May, when the surprise super team spread to face the terrible Thanos. The DG Comics team “Justice League” should hit theaters in the summer of that year, with Superman, Batman; A green lamp and an admiring woman front and center.
Also hit in 2015 is “Star Wars: Episode VII”, one of the biggest sequels coming out in the near future. Fox wants to release a superhero movie in the same year as these other major geek properties, and there’s no way “The Fantastic Four” can matchup to these titles heading into the year. Even if it’s a great movie, the Fox movie will be buried when it comes to promotions.
Hopefully, “Fantastic Four” will give fans of Marvel Comics’ popular family something to be proud of, but they will have an uphill battle with the release year.
