While shopping at a Hartford, Connecticut CVS Pharmacy a couple of weeks ago, I happened to notice a display rack filled with boxes of Moon Pies. I hadn’t seen that brand of snack cakes in retail stores in quite a while and I had never seen them for sale at a CVS Pharmacy. Upon close inspection, I saw that these Moon Pies were not the regular, full – sized variety that I used to eat as part of my lunches in elementary school. The boxes of snack cakes that were on display at CVS Pharmacy were actually Mini Moon Pies, which I had never heard of or seen before.
I was immediately interested in these snack cakes, because they reminded me of when I was a child and also because of the price being charged for them. The price being charged for the 7.2 ounce boxes of Mini Moon Pies, each of which contained six individually – wrapped pies, or snack cakes, was $1 per box. At such a price, I just had to purchase at least one box of them. I did purchase one box of the Mini Moon Pies and now I wish that I had purchased more, because they quickly sold – out and I haven’t seen them back at that CVS Pharmacy since. They were so good that I decided to write a review of the item. Presented here, in an effort to assist the consumer, is one food writer’s consumer product review of the 7.2 ounce box of Mini Moon Pies.
Packaging
The Mini Moon Pies are packaged in a fairly heavy – duty cardboard box. Inside the box are six individually – wrapped snack cakes. Each Mini Moon Pie is packaged in a small plastic wrapper and the wrappers are easy to open. The box that holds the Mini Moon Pies is not too large and does not take – up very much storage space.
Size
The size of the Mini Moon Pies is roughly the same as most small coffee cakes or snack cakes. Even though they are mini snack cakes, one cake is still big enough to mostly satisfy my appetite. The only complaint I have in regard to the size of the Mini Moon Pies is that I wish they were bigger, so I could enjoy more of the great taste offered by these snack cakes.
Texture
The texture of the Mini Moon Pies is pleasant and enjoyable. The snack cakes are soft, yet firm enough to offer a sense of “bite” that makes these treats more interesting than if they were entirely soft.
Nutritional Facts
Mini Moon Pies contain 130 calories, with 30 calories from fat, per one cake serving. This product also contains 3.5 grams total fat, 2.5 grams saturated fat,0 grams trans fat. o mg of cholesterol, 110 mg of sodium, 23 grams total carbohydrates, 0 grams dietary fiber, 11 grams of sugars and 2 grams of protein.
Taste / Flavor
The flavor offered by Mini Moon Pies is very good. They are sweet, but not overly so. Even though the label states that the cakes are chocolate flavor, the only real chocolate that I can detect is in the coating on the outside of the cakes. I still can’t determine if the creamy filling in the Mini Moon Pies is marshmallow, or more of a standard creme filling. At any rate, the creamy filling marries well with the thin layers of pastry and the tasty chocolate coating. The overall flavor offered by Mini Moon Pies is very satisfying. To be honest, I think that these snack cakes taste even better than I remember them tasting.
Price
The price that I paid for one 7.2 ounce package of Mini Moon Pies at a Hartford, Connecticut CVS Pharmacy was $1.00. I am not sure if this price was a sale price or the regular price charged for this item, because the clerk at CVS Pharmacy said that she thought the price was the normal price, although I had never seen the Mini Moon Pies there previously, or since then.
Overall Rating
All things considered, Mini Moon Pies are delightful snack cakes that are very flavorful and fun to eat. They maintain a sense of nostalgia for consumers who used to eat Moon Pies when they were young and are very reasonably – priced. Mini Moon Pies are highly recommended by this food writer.
