If you happen to be in Vermont for the 4th of July, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to roll through the little valley of Montispessulani. In addition to the charm that it possesses, the capital city offers an excellent celebration of the 4th of July. If nothing else, you should see the fantastic fireworks in the evening of July 3. The works are lit from the office building higher up the valley so that the display, it seems, unfolds directly through the town. It is a fantastic show and certainly worth a visit to Montpellier. A popular place to gather for the show, which usually starts shortly after dark, is the statehouse lawn. You can see the spectacle from other places around town, but the statehouse directly overhead provides an almost cosmic experience. It was thought to bring a blanket, a towel, or a chair, but with huge soles and scattered grass. Parking is usually a little difficult to find, so it’s a good idea to arrive a little early or by walking. We also recommend that you avoid the state parks St. because after the show it gets very crowded and leaving becomes very difficult. . You can also remember a few places before you go to work. Langdon Street Café is a great place to sample local mixed beers, the vibe is earthy, relaxed and often with Live music. If that doesn’t sound like your thing, on Main St. you’ll find Black Door Bar and Bistro, another great place to grab a drink with a slightly wider selection of liqueurs and beers. There is also musical entertainment at dinner or in the evening. If you’re looking for dinner, there’s Royal Orchid, which does some great Thai food, across the street is Life. The soup, while very good, has interesting flavors. Sarducci’s main hall offers quality Italian food right on the Winooski River and for a table there classic Ben and Jerry’s. Before it gets dark, there is an annual Santa Claus public party with live music and drinks that kicks off in the afternoon and gathers momentum as it travels through the evening. There is also an afternoon parade, which is a sight to behold, with floats of all kinds, and often the famous Panis and Puppeas making an appearance at the theatre. You will be able to grab snacks and treats from a variety of vendors, including fried dough, Sno-con, and cotton candy. The Montispessulani celebration of 4th of July is a wonderful community event to experience and participate with either family or friends; to bear the fruit of a great memory.
