Movie Review: Black Swan

All Black is the best movie I’ve seen since Inception. Inception and Black Flame with Psyche of Man are both brilliantly made and handled. Both films were nominated for Best Picture Oscars. All Black received 5 Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Actress, Cinematography, Editing, and Director. I did not feel such emotions when I saw Hur Locker. Seeing this movie is quite an experience and one you don’t want to miss.

Plot: Our story begins in the theater. Dancer Prince Bethsan retires and holds auditions to cast the Swan Lake role. At this moment, all dancers dream of producing lead. Nina, Natalie Portman, hardly dares to believe that she will get the role. The thing about Swan Lake is that the lead has two dancing parts, the White Swan and the Black Swan. The White Swan is innocent, but its evil twin, the Black Swan, is seductive and destructive. It is rare to find such a dancer. Nina is the perfect Swan; he dances perfectly, but without passion. His new rival, Lily, is the perfect Black Swan. She has a harlot’s art, but she dances beautifully and with lust. Nina wins the party and so begins her spiral into darkness and obsession. She begins to explain, as everyone believes, that she has an obsessive mother who also used to be a dancer. Lily and Nina’s friendship strikes and the movie moves further into Nina’s darkness, you’re not sure if she’s losing it or if everyone can get it. watch the movie you will have to consult yourself, and you may want to watch it twice. you can digest it. The film is very dark with very disturbing and vivid ghosts, which also disturb me and do not disturb me very much. That said, I will admit this film when it comes out on DVD. This film is a wonderful but terrifying exploration of the darkness of the human soul as something lurks to the exclusion of all else. We all have a white and fierce swan inside of us.

Like I said before, there is some amazing photography and camera work in this movie. I was impressed with the quality of the cinematography in this movie. It was nice to see a film that doesn’t rely entirely on heavy CG (although I suspect a fair amount of effects in this film) for the film. Some shots are grainy and dark, some dream like shots quality. This cinematography matched the style of the film. This movie is very artistically made.

The acting was fantastic. Natalie Portman plays the main character, Nina. Portman has such an ethereal quality about her that adds to the film. He has such an expressive face that lets you know what’s going on inside the movie. She is such a good actress. I don’t know that many other actresses could have played this role. He is totally believable in the midst of his breakdown. She is excellent. I hope this role gets nominated. Mila Kunis plays Lily. Lily’s black swan is Nina’s white swan. Where Nina presents the perfection of the dance, Lily personifies the fun and spirit of dancing, but her art is no match for Nina. Lily is a bad girl who breaks all the rules. Eat what you shouldn’t, party and drink. She has fun where Nina never had any. Lily shows Nina a whole new world that helps push her to the brink. Vincent Cassel plays Thomas who is the director of the company. He decides who gets which parts. He is a womanizer and all around not a nice guy. He built up his dancers and destroyed them. Vincent does a fantastic job as a villain in this role. Barbara Hershey plays Nina’s mother. His mother, Nina, was a dancer in her youth. She couldn’t succeed so she pushes this world into her daughter. She imposes strict rules on Nina and is as much a villain in this story as Thomas. Hershey does an excellent job as the overly strict mother. She is believable in the role and you can see why when Nina lets go she starts to lose her grip on the scene. Winona Ryder plays the small part of Beth, a former company star who also has a breakdown of her own. Almost the future of Nina in Beth. Ryder does an excellent job as a dying star who can’t deal with the fact that it’s her time. Overall the acting was fantastic and really adds a depth to this movie that it wouldn’t have otherwise.

I really enjoyed this film. Excellent all around. It is very important that this is done. I have to warn you that this movie is coming to you. I had a physical reaction to this movie and the movie didn’t touch me as deeply as when I saw Hur Locker. One of those movies that takes you on a journey and by the end you’re tired, but in this case the journey is worth it. I expect this movie to win Best Picture and Best Actress. Buying this one on DVD when it comes out. It’s the best I’ve seen in a long time.
