Movie Review – Once (2006)

This movie, which was filmed in Ireland, is a delightful story, full of beautiful music throughout. Americans won’t recognize any of the stars even though the guy is Glen Hansard from the Irish band “The Frames”. Ironically, there are no names in the movie; certainly we never hear them spoken.

The guy plays the guitar (nicely) and the singer is the singer in the play. During the day he works at his father’s vacuum cleaner repair shop and as a busker (street) at night singing and playing for money in the streets of Dublin. He meets a girl (unnamed) who is Czech, who is a classical musician, sells flowers and cleans houses and lives with his mother and the girl.

they meet in the street and the girl is captivated by the beauty of the guy’s song. He finally asks him about the subject of his love songs and finds out that the girl has left him singing about him, he seems to still love her, Writes songs about her, but he says that he does not want to return. They go together to a piano shop, which allows a girl to come in and play with her because she doesn’t own a piano. They play some beautiful duels together; a girl invites a guy to her house to meet her mother and daughter.

They continue to play their music together. In fact, their song “Falling Slowly” won the 2007 Academy Award for Best Original Song. The music tells their love the story they write and they recite and finally recite their songs with the group. Together they make a record that he can take to London to help him in his music career.

The story is beautiful, the music is excellent, and the ending is realistic. The couple recognized their budding love for each other, which they were able to demonstrate with their music. What more do you want from a movie? For one, Glen Hansard and his co-star composed and performed all original songs in this film. Also, none of the main characters is a professional actor which adds another dimension of reality to his story. You should check out the movie if their love is enough to make such a life-changing decision to stay together. You will want to see it “more than ever” only in experience the beauty and harmony of their music.
