You’ve all heard the name “Generation Y” used over and over again, but you have also likely heard many other names for the generation that followed the infamous Generation X. These multiple names can lead to confusion as to which name is most correct in defining the generation.
The good news is that a generation is not easily defined, and that these multiple names are born out of different understanding of what makes up this generation. Each of these names represents something different about this generation.
Generation Y – Starting with the basics, Generation Y was probably the first name for this generation. The name originates as simply a way to distinguish this generation from the previous, Generation X, which is still known for its low view of morality and lack of direction. However, the portion of the population who coined the term Generation Y in the late 1970s would today be classified as Gen Xers by many sociologists.
Millennials – The first name for this segment of the population to be coined by members of this generation was Millennials. This name is used most prominently by authors and sociologists William Strauss and Neil Howe because it fully separates this demographic from the stigmas associated with Generation X. As the name suggests, Millennials draw much from undergoing their rites of passage around the turn of the millennium.
Echo Boomers – This generation is primarily the offspring of the Baby Boomer generation, and their numbers reflect this. The generation known as Generation Y, also called the Echo Boomers, has nearly three times the numbers of Generation X. The Echo Boomers did not reach the same numbers of the original Baby Boomers, and therefore this title merely shadows that of their parents.
Net Generation – Generation Y lives on the Internet. In fact, these are the kids who grew up alongside the fledgling Internet. Their fate is tied into the management of data and social networking of today’s web, and as such they have been dubbed the Net Generation. Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, these people have had a hand in it all, and will not soon let go.
First Digitals – Along with their title “Net Generation,” this demographic has snagged the moniker “First Digitals.” This name has been given them due to their status as the first generation to grow up almost entirely within the Digital Era. “First Digitals” holds a lot of power and meaning, as the Digital Era has both defined and radically altered this demographic when compared to those who came before.
Trophy Generation – Another moniker that gives incredible insight to Gen Yers is the name “Trophy Generation.” This title is given primarily as a result of their childhood experience. As this demographic grew up, they were bombarded with the concept that anyone who worked hard was capable of success in whatever area they worked. This was no more apparent than in childhood sports, where it became common practice for every child who participated to be awarded a trophy. This practice served to both minimize the accomplishments of those who excelled and to create the idea that every person is special.
