A new trend right now are push presents. The trend originated in India and Italy. These are gifts that a husband gives it his wife after she delivers their child. The gifts are usually quite expensive and lavish. Most of the time it is jewelry, but handbags and clothing are both popular also. A 2007 survey of over 30,000 respondents by BabyCenter.com found that 38% of new mothers received a push present, and 55% of pregnant mothers wanted one. On the other hand 40% of the pregnant women and the new moms stated that the baby was a gift enough and did not want anything else.
No longer will a bouquet of flowers cut it. A couple of years ago, jewelry stores started marketing push presents. They try to sell diamond necklaces and rings with the babies’ birthstone on it. They try to make it easy on the expectant father so he can just pick something out that they recommend and not have to spend so much time debating on what to get the new mom.
Many celebrities have joined in on this trend. According to US Weekly, Marc Anthony bought Jennifer Lopez a $300,000 eight-carat diamond ring to celebrate her giving birth to their twins. Tori Spelling received a $1600 Balenciaga Arena Bag from her husband Dean McDermott last year after giving birth to her son Liam. We’ll see what she gets this summer when she has her second child. Also, Katie Holmes was given pink and white diamond earrings from Tom Cruise when she gave birth to Suri back in April 2006.
Now, what average day couple has even $1500 to spend on a push present when they are having a baby. I know when I had my son last year, I would have killed by husband if he would have spend that much money on a gift for me when we had a baby that needed stuff. I think that if you are going to get your wife a push present, get her something meaningful and inexpensive. I know this goes against the trend of push presents, but so what. As a mother I rather have an inexpensive meaningful gift to remember the birth of my child then have to go into debt for a piece of jewelry that I probably would never wear. That being said, I did not receive a push present at all. Like most moms, I believe my son in my arms was my present.
