The crib is a staple for any nursery, it is something that you just cannot do without! You may find out quick enough that picking out a baby crib can be a little harder than you probably thought. There are so many different styles of cribs available on the market today, and if you do not know what you are looking at, picking out the right one can be very difficult. I have compiled a list of different types and styles of cribs in hopes that it will make it easier for you to tell the difference between the various makes and models.
The first thing that you must learn is the difference in the styles of baby cribs and nursery furniture. The first one that we will discuss is the traditional style cribs. Many times you can recognize traditional styles because their finishes are darker colors such as oak and dark cherry. Traditional style cribs are probably the most decorative of all the styles that we will discuss. They normally feature intricate and unique touches such as drawer handle accents, which are most times metal or steel. You will also find the breathtaking spindles on traditional style cribs. They are some of the most beautiful pieces of nursery furniture you will find.
Next on our list are the gorgeous Colonial style cribs. Colonial style cribs can be recognized by the intricate hand-carved woodwork. These beautiful wood engravings can often times be seen on the headboards and footboards of a crib and in the drawers of the bureaus that often accompany the crib. Colonial style was influenced in great part by the Europeans, and possesses the nostalgic old war feel. Colonial style cribs and nursery furniture are available in several more finishes unlike that of the traditional styles.
Contemporary style cribs and nursery furniture are definitely in style right now. Contemporary styles are some of the most elegant and simple of design. They will lend your nursery a very chic and simple feel. You will not find many contemporary style cribs in a dark finish such as the cherry and oak of the traditional styles. Contemporary finishes are usually lighter such as that of maple or aspen. The neutral finish on the contemporary styles are what set it apart from the other styles.
Last but not least come the treasured Shaker style furniture. Shaker furniture is a simple and beautiful style that dates back to early America. Shaker furniture was made with great pride and skill and was made to last. You will find smooth, solid and strong lines in the design of shaker furniture. This style of furniture us usually very plain, with little or not decoration. You will not normally find the intricate woodwork as with the Colonial style or the mystical spindles such as with the Traditional styles. Shaker furniture seems to stand out with its simple design and construction alone.
Now that you know the difference between the various styles of nursery furniture, it will be much easier to recognize the styles in stores. Educating yourself about baby products before heading to the store will help you feel more confident at what you are looking at, and keep your from feeling quite so overwhelmed!
