Party Idea’s for a Backyard Luau

A luau is a great fun way to throw your next party. It’s perfect for the hot tropical summer months and will take your guests away to a paradise island of their own, right in your backyard. People will love the creativity of the theme, and like getting into the theme. You can run wild with the theme or keep it to an intimate gathering. If you want to throw the party yourself here’s what you need to know…..

Invites: Many places will sell themed luau invites. If you can’t find the perfect invite you can make it look exactly how you want by making them yourself on your home computer. There are reasonably priced online companies that will print up invites so you don’t have to use your printer’s ink.

Attire: Have your guests dress in Hawaiian themed outfits to add to the feel of the tropical theme. This should be noted on the invites so your guests know ahead of time. The better prepared they are the more your party will look like you are actually in Hawaii. Have a few grass skirts and lei’s for your guests who forget to dress to match the theme.

Food: Keep it simple. If you prepare ahead of time you can save yourself a lot of work the day/night of the party. Prepare food to be served buffet style ahead of time. To keep with the theme bright colored linens and tableware are your best bet. Theme specific items are available online and at mostly all party stores. If you will be drinking at your party, classic tropical cocktails will add to the ambiance. Think daiquiris and pina colada. Make your guests feel as if they are in a distant tropical island.

Décor: This is an easy theme to decorate any space with. Many chain party stores have generic decorations for a luau themed party. Wall hangings of palm trees and hibiscus flowers will add to the feel of the party. You can even buy inexpensive wicker tiki torches. This will add a huge element to your party, and it’s so easy. Use your imagination and even your creative skills to think of easy ways to decorate.

Entertainment: What luau is complete without a fun game of limbo. Decorate an old broom stick with colorful streamers and play Hawaiian music. If children will be present, maybe think of hiring a hula dancer to give lessons, or a face painter.

Music: Choose music that is neural to all age ranges if the guests will be a varied crowd. It’s always a good idea to go with music that reminds you of Hawaii. Think Jimmy Buffet, or classic Hawaiian music. Some websites have premade compilation cd’s ready to buy to take the guesswork out of it. Party classics are also good to get everyone dancing.
