Phrase Origins: Hairy Eyeball

I have heard the term “hairy eye”, but I never knew what it was. I know I have been silly with my sister. We said that it sounds uncomfortable, as some would say it is gross. However, we decided that if someone car had the truth out of his eyes, we would not care. It would just be interesting to know if it was a problem.

But the eye is one place in the human body that hair does not grow. Some people have hairs on the eyelids from the eyelashes, or on the sides of the eyes from the eyelashes, which make it look like there is a little hair in the eye. This is most common in dogs, because they have hair all over their face.

but “hairy eye” is a phrase. I haven’t used the phrase, so I’m not quite sure what it means. However, when I looked it up, I found that it means the look of the eyelids being lowered, so the eyelids make it look like a hairy eye. It often refers to suspicion or hostility, but it can also mean other emotions.

The phrase seems to have originated in the United only from the 1960s. The oldest known printing of the phrase is from November 1961 in the Galveston Daily News. In a report about a conversation with Carol Burnett who said, “Since she [Burnett’s sister] is all childish for children. She really brought me up. She was telling me about a boy looking at her and saying, “She gave me hairy people.”

This does not mean suspicion or hostility. but it is one of the other affections. This time I like the man. I’m pretty sure after reading this someone I loved gave me the “hairy eye.” But I think it’s usually because I’m nervous, or I’m afraid to approach a person and just talk to them.

Anyway, the feeling of suspicion or hostility is more evident in November 1963 from the New York Times. He said, “He gave me the silent eye” – means to disapprove of someone.

It is an honest prayer. In April 2012, a story titled “Paternity Focus Aims Big, Hairy Eyeball at New KC Sheriff” was published on the Internet. For some reason, Planned Parenthood Steve Strachan, the newly appointed sheriff of King County, Washington, was not happy.

In other uses it is the name of beer. Hairy Eyeball made by The Lagunitas Brewing Company.
