There is no way that any New Orleans Saints fan can say that this offseason has been boring. In fact, Saints fans who usually complain about not getting enough on the sports page, may be sick of hearing about their favorite team. From applying for the franchise tag to arguably the best player in franchise history to Bounty-Gate and the ongoing Spy-Gate investigation, there has certainly been no shortage of Saints news coverage. While the chocolate picks have been told, I wanted to discuss something else. Football news for change. There is still little time left before the teams head into camp and there are still some big names available that could certainly help this They have free agency on the other side with Lombardi, but before I start any speculation, let me say for the record that I am in complete agreement that the long-term issue of free agent savior Drew Brees is a top priority. Now on to the names…
Osi Umenyiora – If you’ve seen nothing but the Lakers, you probably don’t know that the New York Giant defensive end is the worst to have a public war of words with the administration. Whatever you think of the legend, the Saints are usually played by the players. Aside from this spat, Umenyiora is a great talent guy whose history with new Saints defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and the Giants has made it known that offers are irresistible. I see 3 problems with this so far. First, the Saints don’t have a ton of cap space. Second, Drew Brees is still unsigned. Finally, the Saints do not have a 2nd round pick in 2013. In the event, if Mickey Loomis can pull this off, it will pay immediate dividends for a team badly in need of a quality pass rushing defensive end.
Jacoby Jones – Saints former 1st round pick Robert Meachem in the offseason San Diego. Not that Drew Brees needs any more weapons, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to have too many. Jones is a New Orleans native and at 6′ 2″ tall and weighing about 215 pounds, Sean Payton (or whoever he’s calling the plays this season) will give himself another big play. They can come cheap.
Roy Williams – Now before the holy faithful, put this one behind your head, just hear me out. Williams is a big-bodied receiver who has proven to be a tough draft pick. Not so long ago, Williams was on fire in Detroit. While in Dallas, that team was completely and utterly upset, and honestly, what receiver did he succeed in Chicago? Also, Roy comes cheap and is looking to re-energize his career and what better place is to do that than in the pass happy Sean Payton system.
