It’s that time of year again in school lunches. Most people like turkey sandwiches, unless you’re a vegetarian, and they’re also good without the bacon. I compared the Oscar Mayer trimmed turkey breast with the Hillshire Farm Deli turkey breast and I chose thinly sliced turkey breast. Here is how they measured each other.
Nutritional value: Serving sizes are both about 2 ounces. Turkey Oscar Mayer 45 calories, .5% fat, 20 mg cholesterol (7%), 460 mg sodium ( 19%), carbohydrates P. * 1, and 8 P. protein. Turkey Hillshire has 60 calories, .5% fat, 25 mg cholesterol (8%), 620 mg. sodium (26%), carbohydrates P. II, sugar P. II, and protein P. II.
Flavor: Oscar Mayer shaved turkey has a nice turkey flavor that is not too salty. The texture is soft but not chewy and the thin pieces tear apart quite easily. They are not too closely packed. Unfortunately Hillshire Farm cut the turkey so thin it was very difficult to prepare and pull into small pieces, not pure. The flavor was good, maybe a little tastier than Oscar Mayer, but probably because it’s higher in sodium.
Hillshire Farm was a bit of a challenge to open. The plastic container was transparent and I needed a knife to remove it. There was no way to open the sealed plastic bag without using a knife or scissors. Oscar Mayer’s file is more user friendly. The hard plastic container has a hinged corner that bends back and peels very easily. Oscar Mayer also uses less plastic in their products since they don’t have an internal bag, which is more environmental.
Personally, I prefer Oscar Mayer’s shaved turkey breast over Hillshire Farm deli’s signature thinly sliced turkey breast. It has less calories, sodium, cholesterol and sugar and is also less expensive. The package is easy to open and uses less plastic than Hillshire Farm’s. Oscar Mayer’s turkey meat tastes good without a lot of salt and feels pleasant in the mouth.
Oscar Mayer shaved turkey-breast also comes in a musk flavor, smoked honey flavor. It is a tasty and healthy protein for use in sandwiches, dressings, pitas, salads, eaten in a crumb or with cheese in any way and fruit is a great snack . I recommend having some easy meals on hand and pick me-ups.
