I will admit it. I’m a pushover for catalog products, and my latest acquisition is an unusual item from Dr. Leonard’s Discount Healthcare Catalog.
For several years I thought of changing from a long, soaky, hot bath to showers because of a balance problem. And let us perish in his face; I’m not a spring chicken; just getting in and out of the barrel “isn’t” as easy as it used to be. Finally, a few months ago, the time had come and I decided to make the transition, but I wasn’t happy about it. I love relaxing in the barrel, reading the latest novel that tickles my fancy, and occasionally taking a sip from the strainer leveled at the edge of the barrel. No grief, nor any pregnancy, out of pure concern.
My husband suggested I check out the sure-grip bath handles showcased in Dr. Leonard’s healthcare catalogue, so I studied the ad in several issues of the catalogue, and also in competitor’s catalogues. The announcements were quite similar. The picture in each case shows the adhesive, which is somewhat the size of a telephone, used on supports, barrels, and shower walls. It is designed to help prevent dangerous slips and falls and provide strong support when entering and exiting the barrel.
It also had suction cups and colored flip down tabs to close the handles securely. If you wanted to move the device to another location, you just flipped the tabs up and moved it. What is easier? They came in 11 and 23 1/2 lengths. I was convinced, and ordered about each one. Then I sat anxiously waiting for my fixed handles to arrive. They took a little longer than I expected, so I filled in the time of scrubbing and re-scrubbing to make sure the surface was free of any residue that the new handle could adhere to properly.
Finally, my package arrived, and I rushed to the bathroom to install both secure handles and run the water for my first sit in the bath in months. I admit that the watery tabs on both sides are depressing; They were a little more difficult than the letters would have you believe, but once they were secure, I was amazed at how tightly they held the sides of the barrel and the wall. where I had decided to board them.
Ah… treat me to the time of my luxury. I have to say I enjoyed that spa more than any spa I’ve been to in years.
Here are a few words of caution, the next time you think about buying sheds for your loved one or loved ones.
1. Make sure the surface is clean. If any soapy build-up is built up, sure hands either don’t work or will dissolve in a short time as moisture seeps around the edges.
2. Use loops as supports to help your balance, not as weight-bearing devices. If one of the machines were to break when it was under a lot of weight, it could cause a nasty fall.
3. Check the loops each time you intend to use them. Bathrooms have a lot of moisture and if moisture or grime finds its way under the handles, the connections can loosen. Just take a moment to stop and restore if necessary to make sure things are safe.
They are great for travel too.
