The Tri-Village area is really starting to impress when it comes to reasonably priced dining options. The Red Door Tavern might be the oldest of all. It must be the only bar in Columbus that still has guns hanging from the ceiling, which I hear was common in many 19th century bars.
The space itself in the shop is rather small, but there is also a seating area for the overflow of patrons. For a bar, Red Door Tavern has all the bases covered. They offer a surprisingly nice selection of draft beers (reviewed 7), considering that I could only find one draft beer.
The food at this place is legendary and the owners of the Red Tavern shop are proud of this, listing various awards and accolades that have been awarded to particular sandwiches and other items on the menu.
Now to the caveats.
Oath # 12
We ate our breakfast in the courtyard, which we do not hesitate to do often. I think the service is always faster, especially filling the drinks, and you swing your feet like a little kids while you eat Proven to aid digestion.
Having been to the Red Door Tavern a couple of times before, I had a pretty good idea of what to order. The Twisted Pelican is listed as one of the “Top 30 Sandwiches in Columbus”. First of all, I would like to see this list. This album is so right up my alley. But, based on my experiences so far in traveling between segments in Columbus, I cannot believe this statement to be accurate. This sandwich easily belongs in the top 10.
The Pelican Twist, like the Eagle Twist and a few other sandwiches on the menu named after bent birds, is served in a giant, warm, pretzel bun instead. Then pile on hot, thick slices of turkey and smother melted Swiss cheese, shredded lettuce, tomato and onion with a side of Italian dressing. I. .a little about the recipe and the lard en.
It’s really hard to describe how different and delicious a pretzel bun tastes with this sandwich. The texture and flavor that a unique bun brings to a sandwich elevates everything else. It is famous in the same way as minor league ball park hamburgers in Krispy Kreme donuts, but healthier and more useful.
If I had ordered hash browns as a good side for the whole mess, I would have given the Red Door Shop a perfect score.
Verdict: 7/8 PJs
I want to go back and replace the pretzel packets in other menu items.
Oath # 11
The Red Door Tavern is a neighborhood restaurant right on the border of Upper Arlington, Marble Cliff and Grandview that has a great sandwich selection. The interior of the forest is all dark; That’s a nice feeling. We sat in the market because it wasn’t very busy and there didn’t seem to be any people sitting there. The waiter was pleasant, and although he was slow, we did not eat well, which I like.
“The thing” I ordered with onion as part of my lunch. Grilled Swiss cheese and American cheese with onion and bacon white bread. It was really good. The crispy bacon and plenty of cheese was good and I think a lot of onions always make a sandwich taste better.
Onion rings come in two varieties, beer batter or bread. I got them a beer ram. In fact, they shouldn’t even offer bread, because something shaken with beer is terrible, and you’re at the bar, so they can just tell you to screw you if you don’t like the beer. By the way, the onion rings were fantastic.
Overall the meal was very good, but not filling. I saw some other sandwiches that were a little more expensive, and seemed larger and probably more filling. I’ve eaten at the red door shop before and it’s always been really good, but while this meal tasted great, it only made for an above average meal.
Verdict: 5/8 PJs
