For remodelers, removing popcorn or acoustic ceilings can be one of the most difficult tasks in a room. Even shows on HGTV and other networks can rarely tackle this task. Somewhere south from southern paper sells removal in most minds.
My wife and I bought a house and now we live in it, knowing that we have to occupy this burdensome project in all our 2 bedrooms. the history of the house
So we did a little research, talked to some local professionals and got to work.
First you need to know what you are doing. The acoustic ceiling or popcorn is sprayed on through the drywall process and consists of a mixture of drywall and a little Styrofoam. If you are lucky it has not been painted. If he has work, it will be more difficult. You can test a small section in the corner of the room using the techniques below, to enter #7 and see how it works. Just make a square foot or less, and remember that even this small piece will make a big mess.
Recognize that the process is messy, dusty, and time-consuming. However, it is still possible for a pair of 50 year olds. Except for our living room which is vaulted and over 17ft high. all the ceilings in our house. For this we had a professional drywall in Pegmata and help bringing living room. To do this, the same person used a combination of DIY and professional help, very efficient and inexpensive.
For we are dealing with the roof; He does it when he is first in the room. Here are the steps and techniques used to remove old popcorn ceilings.
1. Remove all furniture, window coverings, covers, etc.
2. mask the windows and doors (except the door to access the room and any room doors that you want to take off the hinges and take out of the room. ok)
3. Remove or mask off ceiling fans, light fixtures and anything else hanging from the ceiling.
4. If you haven’t done it yet, remove all the walls, pictures, curtains, EVERYTHING!
5. If you haven’t changed the carpet or flooring, you must cover the floors completely with a good heavy duty plastic tarp tightly sealed to the baseboards .
6. Get your tools together which include:
a couple of large drywall commands with their molars (7 inches at least);
Two poles of sand and sandpaper (120 or higher gravel)
two large spray bottles filled tap water
masks for you and a helper (hopefully you’ll have two people for this)
Goggles or some kind of eye protection (they are available cheaply at your local big box hardware store
two stairs to the height of the room properly moderately wide. (8 ft ceilings, 6 or 7 ft stairs, higher ceilings, taller stairs);
a few cloths (both wet and dry for wiping hands and for drywall knives) (and another two cloths for cleaning the ceiling)
and dust pans and containers (such as plastic garbage)
some shoe covers (obstacles stick to your shoes)
Finally, place the shop vac outside the door to this room, it will be necessary
OK, but will you be afraid? If we do not proceed.
7. You have come to the Rubicon. This is why it is necessary to either finish it, or do something else, or live with a greedy ceiling!
All right. Go to the far corner from the door and place the ladder two feet from the corner. Walk around and see if you can get to the corner with the drywall metal against the joint between the ceiling and the wall.
OK, now take your sprayer and wet a section in an angle about 2ft by 2ft, no bigger; you must be younger first. Let the water moisten the popcorn ceiling for a minute or so. Then, from the last point, from corner to corner, use a drywall knife and scrape the popcorn ceiling over the floor. It will take you time to learn the correct angle, pressure and technique, but take heart, you will have it.
My wife has done several of ours, especially in large rooms like bathrooms and bedrooms. (That’s right; if you’re going to do that, you’re also going to make rooms!)
One thing to be careful of, you don’t want to make a joint out of the ceiling or dig holes in the sheetrock. Any of this will have to be repaired and re-engineered, which is time-consuming and messier than what you already have.
So if you want to put in the first bit, make sure you don’t leave any loose drywall on the ceiling. This will fall off when it is re-textured or painted, losing all the hard work.
Once you’ve finished cleaning the room, messing up and vacuuming all of your stuff, you should tarp up or fold it up and put it away. Whatever works for you here. You’re still going to go back and sand the ceiling with a sander and 120 grit or higher sand paper, then wipe. ceiling with a damp cloth. This should be prepared for raw cloth, re-texture and paint.
In the company of our master we made a light wall, which requires a great deal of work and skill. So we brought in a drywall guy to do the actual texture and we did all the sanding and cleaning of the grout. Elaborate great. He told us how to prepare and sand, we followed his directions, he had a very ready room when he showed up and left with very reasonable charges for his professional work.
In the rest of the house we did something less difficult and less expensive and still had all the ceiling texture. Depending on which part of the country you live in, there are different styles and textures used and available. If you do as we did and have someone make the textures, they will be able to give you examples and preferably patterns of these texture styles.
After we chose one, we wanted to work on it. We removed the old popcorn ceilings, but almost none of the sandalwood did. We just made sure that the ceiling was not left with a loose drywall compound. This will eliminate the need for double cleaning if you require sand. With the room ready, the drywall guy came in and did his thing. We dried it tonight and painted it the next day. The price was great and again it was very reasonable.
Now if you are an expert or willing to assume textures, you can remove any external help, as long as you are willing to live in whatever event you have created in your work.
For us, this was a long-term process, because we were giving birth to each camera completely. We also lived in a remodeled house and were always in court. We were never able to remove those ugly, dirty, dusty, popcorn ceilings and now have freshly painted, clean, up to date ceilings that do this remodeled the house new and bright.
If we can, you can. Good luck and happy remodeling!
