Yesterday my husband and I were shopping at our local Sam’s Club with Bose home theater speakers, and I decided to pick up some of that frozen food section for dinner. Sam’s Club had a wide variety of frozen meals, but what really looked good to us was a product from the SeaPak Alpheus Company, called the Alpheus Scampi.
The SeaPak Alpheus Company
SeaPak started its business almost 60 years ago, on Saint Simons Island, Georgia Florida). In this town, shrimp has been a way of life for many years, and the Alpheus SeaPak Company offers some of the best shrimp on the market.
Description
The front of the box shows the tail of a large shrimp, the bed shows egg noodles in front of the box. The description on the box reads: shrimp in scampi with an authentic round sauce of real butter, garlic, herbs and spices.
Although the picture on the box “shows how big” these shrimp are indeed very large, there are 48-60 shrimp per package. The box itself is two pounds.
Other info taken from the front of the box is that the Sea Pak Shrimp Scampi is “scallion ready”, sautés for as little as 7 minutes, and that it contains no saturated fat.
Easy to Prepare
SeaPak Alpheus Scampi can be prepared in three ways. It can be cooked in a microwave, cooked in the oven at 350 degrees, or how we wanted to prepare it, which was to saute the shrimp in a kettle.
Using the hot pot method, the frozen shrimp is added to the pot, and then the shrimp is cooked for 7 to 8 minutes. The instructions read that the shrimp are done when they turn “orange on the outside and dark white on the inside.”
One serving consists of 7 shrimp, equal to 350 calories, 30 grams of fat, 10 grams of saturated fat, no excess fat. Sodium 550 mg, carbohydrates 2g, fiber 0g, sugars 0g, protein 17 P.
A serving provides 20% of the daily value of vitamin A, 6% calcium, 2% vitamin C, and 10% iron.
My impressions
I once bought a frozen product similar to this, but it contained noodles to go with the frozen shrimp. These shrimp are large, and covered generously with frozen butter and spices. I had to break up the shrimp with a wooden spoon, and as the butter melted, the shrimp turned orange on one side, so the other side would be overcooked as well.
When the shrimp were ready to eat, they were curled into balls and sat in a large tank of seasoned butter. I cooked the pan noodles separately from the egg to serve with the butter sauce, and I made the most delicious, quick dinner .
My husband and I love shrimp, and the Alpheus SeaPak Scampi were really juicy, tender, and full of flavor. The herb butter was perfectly seasoned and didn’t seem too salty in taste. I will definitely buy this again! Cost about $13, which is not too bad for two pounds of large shrimp, prepared in real butter. SeaPak Alpheus Scampi gets two thumbs up from us.
