Another name for the Rhodo Ridgeback is the African Dog. That name might scare you, but it tells you a lot about this powerful, incredible, loyal dog. Lions are born to hunt, as their nickname suggests. But dogs are also excellent and make excellent companions.
General view
The dogs are big, lean than slightly but powerfully ripped like the middle distance of an Olympian runner. Usually sandy-brown (wheat) or chestnut-red with black or brown hair. They may have white markings on their feet, chest or belly. Their bodies and heads are like those of a typical dog, with floppy ears, a medium-long nose and a long, slightly curved tail. Males weigh up to 90 pounds, while females weigh up to 75 pounds.
The back of the rhododendrons are usually short-haired types, but they derive their name from the spike of hair that descends the back, a dorsal ridge similar to that of a horse or donkey. This nail is almost the same color as the dog, but sometimes it can be a shade lighter or a shade darker. When a dog is angry or upset, it can raise this spike to a monster effect. Not all noble Ridgebacks will have this ridge.
A brief history
Rhodesian Ridgebacks are said to be descended from a very short bull dog, which lived in the Hottentot tribe, which had a characteristic long coat of hair. Rhodesian Ridgebacks originated in Zimbabwe, but gradually won avid admirers in the last century. The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1952. Rhodesian Ridgebacks can be found in North America. Australia and Africa are his homeland.
Temperament
Despite the rarity of the breed, there are many Rhodesian Ridgebacks that have been abandoned by their owners because the owners didn’t know what they were getting themselves into. Rhodian Ridgebacks are usually surrendered through no fault of their own. Some are abandoned because of health-problems usually associated with large dogs, such as hip dysplasia.
This is a dog that needs every day because it is energetic. Although he is very intelligent, if he is fastidious and confined he has a lot of energy that is not being exercised, he can be destructive. Neutering or spaying the Rhodesian Ridgeback can make the dog more inclined to attend training.
This breed has an excellent reputation with families, but (like all dogs) it needs to be intimate. they were in charge when the children were around. Dogs still make the best watchdogs. Rhododendron Ridgebacks began to gain notoriety when an unsuspecting owner in New Jersey let his dogs roam his neighborhood. Keep these dogs in a secured area.
