Samsung Convoy 2 – a Worker’s Cell Phone

For a rugged, military-style phone the Samsung Convoy 2 is above average in performance and reliability. It’s a light-weight, solid flip phone with a built-in camera and adequate out-of-the-box storage.

It is not a smartphone, but the Convoy 2 is capable of text messaging and internet access – albeit significantly slower then any Samsung smartphone. Internet access is available (with an added fee) through Verizon Wireless or by adding the feature to your cell plan.

For construction workers, laborers and outdoorsmen, this is the cell phone to pick. The screw on back keeps the device dust-free and water resistant. The screw can be a bit difficult to close and lock, but follow instructions and it will keep the phone dry and secure on the inside. Never forget that this is an electronic device and care should be taken to keep it clean and dry at all times.

The Samsung Convoy 2 has exterior clock and volume controls on the outside cover, as well as a built-in speakerphone and voice dial capabilities. It fits nicely in either a custom-fit belt clip case, or a standard universal pouch, but the device is available only in the coffee brown color.

With dual microphones, it does a fair job of noise cancellation. Like most Samsung feature cell phones, it does not quite deliver on eliminating background noise as promised, but most users will not notice. Volume is good, so it’s not so much a problem.

Pairing the device with a Bluetooth is relatively simple to accomplish and use. When matched with a noise-canceling Bluetooth, the Samsung Convoy 2 performs exceptionally better. Overall battery life is well above average after an initial full-day charge, but significantly shorter if Bluetooth pairing is left activated when not in use. There is a noticeable heat transfer after extended use, but this is also common for flip phones.

The device is easy-to-learn and includes push-to-talk capabilities if the feature is added to your cell plan. This is a Verizon Wireless device and does well for most users, although not as good as the Casio Rock or Casio Boulder – both of which were far superior in construction and performance. They were also considerably heavier devices then the Samsung Convoy 2.

Overall, this is a solid military-grade flip phone from Samsung and will perform as expected for those who are rough with their cell phones.
