Scirra Launches Construct 2 Free Edition

Have you ever wanted to make your own video game? Well, here’s your chance.

Scirra is a Londo based start-up that was founded in 2011 by brothers Ashley Gullen and Thomas Gullen. They have recently launched a free edition of Construct 2, a multiplatform game creator that allows developers to publish games with iOS, Android, Windows 8, Facebook, Chrome, HTML5 and Scirra’s own burgeoning Arcade.

This platform allows you to create and publish a wide variety of games without having to do any programming. Construct 2 uses an intuitive drag-and-drop “events” system using the cross-platform HTML5 code. They aim to incorporate everyone into game developing by removing the need to know how to program.

Construct 2 has been rapidly growing in a void left by web development that was previously done with Flash, which has faced a series of challenges over the last few years, dating back to the conflict between Adobe and Apple. The release of Construct 2 will coincide with its 100th update, which introduces webGL shader effects, which allow photohsop-style visual effects to be processed in real-time using GPU hardware. This makes it one of the first tools to bring beautiful artistic effects to the web using a drag-and-drop mechanic.

With nearly a quarter of a million downloads, Construct 2 has over a million plays on the Scirra Arcade. With hundreds of new users registering each week, it makes a great place to market your work, bringing to life games that only you could imagine.

Check out how easy it will be to use Construct 2:

Here are some comments on the platform from around the web.

Ashley Gullen, Director, comments

Developers want to publish their creations everywhere – from their websites to iOS and Android and the upcoming Windows 8 App Store – and preferably simultaneously. Construct 2 is the only tool which makes this painless with its HTML5-based engine, and the gorgeous new WebGL shader effects are the icing on the cake!”

Roy Smith, from appMobi stated
“DirectCanvas can offer a huge performance boost for HTML5 games, and we’re excited to support Construct 2 as a new way for developers to publish mobile games faster than ever before.”,

Eneko Knorr, CEO of Ludei Inc. commented
“It look like HTML5 gaming has finally reached the tipping point and companies like Scirra with powerful game engines, like Construct 2, are clearly leading the way… “When developers combine Construct 2 with our CocoonJS technology, the result is high quality, native-performing Hybrid HTML5 games that get delivered directly to the app stores.”

Scirra is privately funded and following on from the success of its open-source predecessor ‘Construct Classic’, which has been downloaded over half a million downloads to date.
