I needed a new wireless internet system for my home, and I was unsure about the ability to install it properly. I also knew, just to be sure, that I needed some help with the necessary encryption system that would protect my computer from the prying eyes of the tech-savvy smarties lurking in my environment. After some discussion with my husband about who to hire to take care of my web installation, I decided to give Geek Squad a try. What follows is a review of the service provided.
Service Rating: 4.5 (if possible 5)
Pricing
We contracted Geek Squad to provide our wireless installation service through Best Buy where we purchased our system. We know that our local high speed cable Internet provider will charge us $150.00 to access our home and complete the necessary work. Best Buy offered us the Geek Squad service for $159.00. We quoted this price offered by our Internet service provider to the best buy, and the prices matched.
Inquiring whether Best Buy could pad the pricing for services provided by Geek Squad to cover their brokerage fees, I checked pricing for in-site service on Geek Squad’s website. There I discovered that Geek Squad doubled the pricing for a number of home and business services, and the price for the in-home wireless Internet installation was actually $159.00. You can check out their website for four times the price of the particular service you are looking to provide.
Reliability
When we set up our appointment, we set it for 12:45 pm. Not between 9:00 and 3:00 pm, but 12:45 pm. And that’s it on Saturday – Geek Squad is not your phone repairman or your cable guy. Furthermore, we were impressed to get that appointment when we set it up at 5:30 in the evening. At 12:40 pm I received a phone call from a Geek Affairs Squad service representative on a mission to let me know that our personal geek was caught in traffic and would arrive around 1:15 pm, and certainly no later than 1:30 pm. Michael, our geek, rang our bell at 1:20 in the afternoon.
Geek Squad wanted to set up some particulars on our desk and laptop to send a wireless signal, and that list service to Best Buy Who Book established. A somewhat tired family man who had traveled too many hours waiting for service installers who came with the wrong equipment and incomplete service orders, I flew over our Geek Squad geek, wanting to have all the right information and do everything they needed to do. makes our wireless dreams come true. He had everything in order, and our service was carefully scheduled in about 90 minutes, which is 30 minutes less than the two hours quoted by Best Buy.
Our system is somewhat complicated, as we have some quite complicated programs loaded on our desktop computer, which is the computer that was supposed to interface with our laptop. Our Geek Squad man stayed with the job until it was done. Never have to “call in the office” or “get another truck” for the “right tools”.
Product knowledge
I’m talking to Michael, our Geek Squad geek, about all the hardware, software, and less powerful parts of our new wireless service a>. I asked direct questions about what types of computers and what types of users could hack into our service, and under what conditions. He demonstrated a thorough understanding of our current system, the new systems being installed, the types of systems out there that could corrupt our system, and the conditions under which this would occur. It was completely un-defended, and he seemed to have an impressively poor understanding of the products he was installing, such as the more antiquated hardware they interfaced with.
Truth
The technician sent to our house by the Geek Squad was a true geek. The geek talked a lot, and he didn’t look for black pants in black pants, work white shirt and thin black tie.
The big picture
Our experience with Geek Squad was positive. While I find their rates to be a bit high, they are not significantly higher than our local high speed Internet speed /a> provider, and through their service at Best Buy, we were offered a service that was professional, courteous, and efficient. Our service continues to work properly. I would award Geek Squad a rating of 4.5 out of 5.0 and would recommend their service to others.
