Smucker’s Strawberry: Jelly or Jam?

Those will an understanding of jelly and jam will know that the major difference between the two is that Jam still contains the fruit from which it is made from in part. You’ll find strawberries in strawberry jam but you’ll be just about able to see through a jar of strawberry jelly. So, how do the two stack up against one another? For the purpose of this comparison the jelly and jam being considered are both produced by Smucker’s and are both strawberry when it comes to flavor.

Since everyone is in to reading labels, you’ll either be shocked or not surprised at all when it comes to the black and white on the back of the jars. Oddly enough, even though the Jam has actual strawberries in it (the strawberries being the first ingredient listed) they have the exact same lack of everything except sugar. Based upon a single serving which is a single tablespoon (as if anyone actually uses a single tablespoon on a sandwich or bagel) there’s no fat, sodium or protein to be seen. However, of the thirteen grams of carbohydrates that are in the single serving, twelve of them are sugar. Even more surprising is that when it came to the jelly’s ingredients there was no mention of sugar anywhere, but the jam which actually has strawberries does include sugar.

So, if you’re looking for the healthier choice between Smucker’s Strawberry Jam and Jelly, you’ll just have to go with taste.

When it comes to application and taste, Jam undoubtedly takes the cake without much of a fight to be seen. Jelly is made so that it can be spread and cut at an angle, but it simply lacks the fullness that is inherent in jelly, plus there’s simply something about sinking your teeth into some white bread and tasting the strawberry rather than just some pink jello. Even though it’s not homemade or made from around the corner, the Smucker’s Strawberry Jam still has all of the soft consistency you’d expect from a good Jam and goes easily over bread. By comparison, jelly doesn’t spread as easily and quite frankly doesn’t taste as good.

When it comes down to it, Smucker’s produces some of the best Jam you can just pick up off of a shelf without any trouble. While the Jelly isn’t bad at all, the Jam makes it seem as though it is-definitely go with the Jam over the Jelly.
