Suicide Girls have been around since 2001 and has made a huge hit on the public of today’s generations. If someone were to walk up to a grandparent with their 19 year old grandchild, nine times out of ten, the grandchild would know what a Suicide Girl was compared to the grandparent. The website was created back in late 2001 by Sean Suhl and Selena Mooney, also known as Missy Suicide. It was based in Portland, Oregon and was later moved to Los Angeles, California in 2003. Missy stated back when interviewed in 2003 that this was a way to let women show how they wanted their sexuality depicted. Even though it wasn’t the first site of it’s kind, it’s almost one of the most popular one of today’s viewing.
The name came from and origin mix of the novel Survivor that was written by Chuck Palahnuik. Missy decided the name from this novel and has said that her friends and her have seen girls that wouldn’t conventionally fit into society and would kind of be outcasted by their communities because of the way they dress, wear their hair, or the music they listen to. The name has stirred up a lot of controversy and was most heard of when some of the girls on the site appeared in a CSI: New York episode.
The photos posted on the website are taken when and where the girls decide. Some have even taken their own pictures, while others have friends, family or some of the other Suicide Girls have there photosets taken by. There really isn’t even a traditional Suicide Girl. They all have their own unique stances, looks, and auras about them. Some are plain janes with an innocent look about them, while others have dyed hair, piercings and tattoos to express what they feel about life and how they feel about themselves. They are allowed to pick their own background and themes of these photosets. One stipulation of being a Suicide Girl is you have to display your personality. They pictures are hand selected by the girls of which ones they want displayed and then they are approved by the owners of the website.
The Suicide Girls just want to be recognized for their talent and their way of life. They don’t want to be judged and this is their way of making a living without stepping out of their boundaries and what they want to be seen as. These girls are not only talented but also willing to have nudes photos taken of them. This shows that they have more courage that half of the people in America let alone the world. They are willing to be criticized knowing that these criticisms are coming from closed minded people who only see things through rose colored glasses that only show politically corrected lives of people who are too afraid to come out of their shells to actually be themselves.
