Summary of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

As the Harry Potter series comes to an end, here is a chance to relive Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in a condensed version. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets begins with Harry being home for summer with the Dursleys.

While at home, an elf named Dobby visits, telling Harry that he will be in danger if he returns to Hogwarts. When Harry makes it clear that he plans to return despite the warning, Dobby uses a charm, which Harry is blamed for.

The Ministry of Magic informs Harry that he will be expelled from school if he does magic outside of school once more. Harry is then locked away from all of his magic books and has bars placed on his window by the Dursleys.

Ron Weasley comes to free Harry Potter in his dad’s flying car. Harry spends the rest of summer at the Weasley’s house. When Ron and Harry try to return to Hogwarts, they are unable to enter the magical barrier to get there, so Ron and Harry take the flying car instead.

On the way, they crash the car. The car leaves Harry and Ron after ejecting them into the Forbidden Forest. Once back at Hogwarts a monster is released into the castle when the Chamber of Secrets is opened.

The Chamber of Secrets can only be opened by the heir to Salazar Slytherin, the man who built it. Many of the students believe that Harry Potter is the heir because he has spoken Parseltongue, the language of snakes.

In an attempt to find out who the heir may actually be, Harry, Ron, and Hermione use Polyjuice Potion to disguise themselves as Slytherin students. They do not find out who the heir is, and Hermione messes up the potion, giving her the appearance of a cat for over a month.

When the Chamber of Secrets continues to scare students, Harry and Ron decide that they must do something. After finding the entrance to the Chamber of Secrets, Harry and Ron force Gilderoy Lockhart to come with them. When Lockhart does a spell wrong, the ceiling crashes down, and Harry is no longer with Ron or Lockhart.

Harry Potter makes his way into the Chamber of Secrets by himself and discovers Ginny, a student who had opened the chamber after being possessed by Lord Voldemort. A man named Tom Riddle is also in the Chamber of Secrets, and claims that he is a memory. Lord Voldemort’s real name is Tom Marvolo Riddle.

Tom Riddle continues to take life from Ginny’s body, making his memory more powerful. Riddle then releases the monster Basilisk to kill Harry Potter, but Fawkes, Dumbledore’s phoenix, blinds the Basilisk, and Harry kills it with the sword of Godric Gryffindor, which Fawkes had brought.

Harry Potter also stabs an enchanted diary left by Voldemort, which ruins the memory of Riddle and brings Ginny back to life. Dobby tells Harry that he is the servant of Lucius Malfoy, who Harry believes put the diary into Ginny’s cauldron. Dobby is then freed from servitude as a house-elf when Lucius throws away a sock that Dobby picks up, signifying a gift of clothing.

Dobby then protects Harry from Lucius and Lucius’ evil plans. Harry is worried that he may be a kin of Slytherin, but Dumbledore tells him that he could not have used the sword of Gryffindor if he was not a kin of Gryffindor.
