Central America is an enchanted land of mystery from the past to the present. It joins the continents of North and South America and has been settled, claimed and conquered by both as well as Europe. Today it is comprised of seven independent nations: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama. In the region, Belize is the smallest democracy, not declaring its independence until 1981
Each country can boast its own unique culture and sites, but in this article I wanted to focus on the whole country, realizing how many similarities the traveler can find throughout the entire space.
1. Proximity
First and foremost for the Central American traveler, South America is just a two-hour flight away. Most major airlines fly into each country’s capital and major airports. Once you arrive in the country of your choice, you will find that other neighboring countries are easily accessible by car or short flights. Route 1, a well-maintained road, runs the length of Central America.
2. rain forests
The so-called “Lunglands” dominate the landforms of Belize and Panama. The amount of acres declined, as the forest has to be cleared for agriculture and colonization. This deforestation is clearly visible from the air. What remains of the dense forests of virgin waves. The dark rich green fauna and humid temperatures will create memories for a lifetime. Whether you’re hiking, kayaking, or bird watching, the dense cover of the rainforest makes it nearly impossible to determine which area you’re in.
3. Shores
Central America is a land of unspoilt beaches. Warm tropical currents make it an ideal place to swim, surf, or just walk along the sand. Each county is bordered by either the Pacific or the Caribbean Sea, with Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama sandwiched between the two bodies of water. At its narrowest point, the Panama Canal connects 51 miles of ocean to sea.
4. Mayan Ruins
History plays an important role in the region. Dating back to as early as 2600 BC, Mayan ruins can be found throughout the area. Although most of the cities were found in the northern part, there is evidence that trade took place as far south as Panama. The top choices are Tikal in Guatemala and Altun Ha in Belize.
5. Price
Central America is cheap. He can spend the money in all resorts including Costa Rica or Panama. (Although even here, the price is much higher than if you buy the same thing in another exotic place.) However, it is equally possible to book hotel rooms in beach with ocean views and breezes for as little as $25 per night. Dining can be just as affordable, with fresh seafood and drinks caught under $10 per plate.
