5) Warren G. Harding (1921-1923)
Nixon once said that the American “people will know their president’s stock whether he has committed a crime.” Well, Warren G Harding was on the beach (or at least surrounded by staff). Tea Top Dome scandal moved his administration as the “Ohio Gang” in the administration of brides in exchange for handing over oil concessions. In foreign affairs, Harding was a firm recluse. He signed the Treaty of Versailles, but then the US from the affairs of Europe and the World in crisis. 4) Rutherford B. Hayes (1877-1881)
He stole an election, ended Reconstruction, and called out federal troops in striking US workers. Rutherford B Hayes is now considered one of America’s worst presidents, but that wasn’t always the case. In 1948, the head of US President Arthur M. Schlesinger Rutherford was counted by historian B. Hayes #13 out of 29. Since then, the historical evaluation of him has declined greatly. A 2009 C-SPAN poll ranked him #33 out of 42. The main reason for the decline in our historical ratings is a changed view of the meaning and timing of Reconstruction. Hayes’ office came in a disputed election of 1876. His opponent, Samuel J. Tilden, won the popular vote by about 250,000 (out of 8.5 million cast) but The electors of the 4 states were debated. To settle that dispute, Southern Democrats would have if Hayes had become president, pulled Confederate forces from the South and ended Reconstruction. The end of Reconstruction led to the passage of Jim Crow laws and the establishment of segregation in America.
3) Jimmy Carter (1977-1981)
Do you think you are paying too much in taxes now? Top rates under Carter were 70%! Inflation was in the double digits, Iran was taking US hostages, the Soviets were in Afghanistan and oil prices were through the roof. America was working on “corn” and the country’s economic policy was on fire. Add to that Carter’s presidency of appeasement of Hamas terrorists and Jimmy Carter makes the list as one of America’s worst Presidents
2) Herbert Hoover (1929-1933).
He raised taxes and started a trade war in the economic fog of trucks and caused a depression. (President Obama please pay attention to this!). Hoover passed the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 which imposed tariffs on over 20,000 million imported goods at world record levels and killing aid Commerce. According to US government statistics, after the Smoot-Hawley passage, imports into the US fell by 66% while exports from the US decreased by 61%. Hoover also exacted large tax increases. Hoover’s Revenue Act of 1932 doubled the estate tax, increased the corporate tax by 15% and raised the top income tax from 25%. % to 63%. His mishandling of the economy worsened the Great Depression and killed his presidency and legacy.
1) James Buchanan (1857-1861)
James Buchanan was a pro-slavery Northerner who incompetently sat on his hands while he dragged the country toward secession and the civil war. He was considered corrupt and tried to start a war with Utah. His presidency was a complete disaster, which is probably why even the gay community refuses to claim the celibate life as their own.
