Burning scented oils is a great way to make your home fragrant. Fragrance oils are available in a wide variety of scents, and recently more and more companies have entered the scented oil market. A long-time player in this market is The The Body Shop, a company that has been selling home-scented perfumes for decades. More recently, Yankee has entered the game with its own perfume line. In this article I will give a head-to-head comparison of these two popular ones.
Before I begin, you should know that I am affiliated with both companies. I worked for Yankee Candle Company for several years at retail store, and I was also a direct sales consultant for the physical store branch in the past. Although I am not currently affiliated with either company, one of the reasons I feel qualified to provide this product comparison is that I have had extensive experience with both product lines. I have had great experience working for both of these companies, and I promise that I will not influence my work before this article… Honor Scout.
The Basics of Burning Home Fragrance Perfumes
For those of you who are not used to it, this is a rapid crash in burning oils. To properly scent your home with perfumes, you need an oil burner, a small item that holds oil in a saucer and a candle to keep a lighted candlestick underneath. A place that sells oils probably also sells burner oil.
Once you have the burner, simply put anywhere from 4-12 drops of oil in the bowl, depending on the amount of scent you like. Light a tea-candle and place it under the dish. As the pan boils, the wonderful aroma of the oil will begin to fill the room. Once you have achieved the desired level of fragrance (typically 10 to 15 minutes), you can blow out the candle and your home should remain filled with fragrance for several hours.
Price
These two companies are also fair in terms of price. Yankee Candle Company sells a .33 gallon oil for $7.99, while The Body Shop always has it. yes-a little smaller .30 bottle of oil settings available for $7.50. Considering the smallness of the quantity, these oils are sold at essentially the same price. Also, both companies periodically run specials on their oils, so that sometimes one is cheaper than the other. I like to store it when the oil is reduced because you can store it safely and it will never spoil.
A Fragile Choice
it is important to have a variety of scents, since it can be easy to get bored with the same scent all the time. The Body Shop clearly wins this category. There are now 33 different home fragrances available at the Body Works site, and they regularly come out with new & the scents of time. A trip to an actual Thrift Store Shop could reveal an even larger selection of scents when the store is closed. to have extra time and discontinued perfumes in addition to those currently produced.
In contrast, Yankee Candle has only ever produced 24 different oil scents, and many of them are newer scents that they are trying to promote. The reason for reading less about Yankee Candle is simple: Yankee perfumes have only been sold since the beginning of 2007, while The Body Shop has been selling perfumes for years and years. I expect that Yankee will not take long to catch-up and maybe even surpass the Body Shop in the fragrance selection.
Product Performance
I bought my first oil burner from The Body Shop years ago and fell in love with it the day I got it. When I use the oil from Body Shop to burn, I find that I only need 4 or 5 drops of the oil because I have a very strong smell. Within minutes of lighting my oil burner inside, perfumes from The Body Shop fill my house with a wonderful fragrance that you can smell everywhere in the house. Fragrances always smell natural and downright good, and never disappoint.
When the Yankee Candle Company decided to sell home fragrances, I had high hopes. I knew that Yankee made some of the best candles in the world, and I figured the perfumes were just as good. The first thing I noticed was that the Yankee Candle oil dispenser bottle had a larger hole, which means more oil is dispensed in each drop. After I filled the pan with the same amount of oil, I began to wait.
I mean, that’s enough for me to be able to smell Yankee Candle oil. When I finally got the scent, it wasn’t nearly as “powerful” as when I burn the oil from Body Shop. Yankee Candle oil managed to fill the room with fragrance, but I couldn’t smell it all over my house like I was burning with body shopper perfume. Then, as the oil in the dish began to exhale, a strange thing happened. Yankee Cereus oil began to give off a distinctly “chemical” smell. It’s hard to put a finger on it, but I agree with the room.
Wanting to give Janci’s scented candles scents more of a chance, I tried again the next evening. Instead of the normal 4-5 drops, this time I used significantly more oil. The extra oil seemed to help with the strength of the scents and certainly made it smell better than the day before. But the same thing happens when a lo-cuding oil emits a distinct chemical smell. When I added new oil to the dish, that chemical smell went away, but I have to keep adding more oil to avoid the unpleasant smell.
Conclusion: The Body Shop wins!
Overall, I just wasn’t very impressed with the scented oils made by the Yankee Candle Company, and I will be sticking with oils from the Body Shop. Although the price is the same, Body Shop perfumes seem to perform better in my experience. Yankee Candle claims to be the world leader in home fragrance, and although I usually love Yankee products, I think the brand is missing a mark with a scented oil line. The Body Shop has had more time to perfect its product than newcomer Yankee Candle… maybe in a few years, Yankee will be. work out the kinks and some of those things will be solved with scented perfumes.
