If you have ever stood in the same room with one of these birds then you will understand that many people want to jump right in and have one as a pet. These species are not at all uncommon in the parrot world, but they are not as often seen as some of the more common Amazons and African Grays.
There are many different species of Eclectus, including Solomon’s Island, Grande and Vos Meeri Eclectus, among others. Most of them are very similar in appearance, with slight changes in size and color. Males are often covered in shiny green feathers with a large candy corn colored upper bill. Their wings often have hidden shades of red and blue, unless the wings are spread or lowered. Women of color are completely different. The difference is so great that they were once thought to be two completely different species of birds. Only recently, within the past few decades, these same species of birds were found; they are very different in color between the sexes or sexually dimorphic. The colors in the female are usually very high red on the head and neck. The breast and lower part of the body are of a deep lilac in dark purple, the wings a shade of burgundy. Depending on the type of Chosen, there may or may not be a bright blue ring directly around the eye. Female birds have a large bill above and black below.
As regards complexion, it has been reported that there is little difference between males and females. The race is generally quite independent. It’s not a breed that usually shouts and screams for attention or cuddles for an hour like a Cockatoo does. While some of these birds enjoy affection and cuddling, they are more likely to enjoy spending time with you sitting on your arm or lap while watching television or playing in the gym. Male owners are often noted as being very loving birds, rarely biting or barking, and easy to get along with. Female Eclectus are more likely to attract their bird owners, they are a bit more boisterous and have a tougher air around them. As a chosen woman myself, I know this too. While I haven’t had a male, I’ve worked with a few and, in my experience, I can say that males tend to be much friendlier overall. Females can still be very friendly and make wonderful pets, although many people simply want to have a female pet. Males are not to be dismissed simply because they are the greenest; they can have terrible personalities, so no matter what coloring a person thinks they are lacking.
Between the males and females, in addition to the bright and interesting colors and different complexions, the breed has a specific nutritional requirement that must be noted before purchasing this breed of bird. Toe taps and horn flipping are quite common in the Chosen. Toe tapping is when the bird stands perfectly still as if at rest, but its front two fingers simply tap, and back. Rarely does the bird have control over this behavior and will often watch the bird tap its fingers as if it doesn’t know how to do it. Flipping the pen is just as it sounds; meet again the repeated flips of the wings, the bird has no power. A common cause of this is a reaction to something in the diet. Electus cannot tolerate additives, fortified balls and added vitamins in food. Actually, the best diet for almost any parrot is a steady flow of fresh fruits and vegetables, chopped dark green leaves, grains, sprouts But most pet bird owners want to add to their staples seed or pellets. Chosen from bad seed. The pills are packed with additives and nutrients that this breed simply cannot handle. Films that are dead and colorful are even worse the more chemicals are added.
