The Seminole tribe was the only one of the five civilized tribes to violently resist the government’s efforts to force the relocation of their settlements. The five tribes were Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek, Cherokee and Seminole.
On April 3, 1856, in the ‘Florida Peninsula’ publication, Captain Casey, the agent for Indian affairs in Florida, announced the resolution of the following events to capture the Seminoles.

Osceola and his men were forced to raise a white flag of surrender, when it seemed to them that defeat was imminent. The US Army captured the leader in open violation of the rules of war, and Osceola held him prisoner until his death in 1838.
The third and final clash is known as the Battle of Billy Bowlegs. Chief Bowlegs allowed the Seminole to leave Florida with his surrender in 1858. Organized bands of Seminoles remained at Big Cypress [near Miami] and never had the distinction of accepting defeat.
Florida has the second largest population of Native Americans in the eastern US according to the 1980 census. This number will likely increase as future censuses are released – revealing people’s Indian heritage that was often hidden in the past. Many who took refuge in the mountains of North Carolina or in the Florida Everglades to escape the Trail of Laryms from the west claimed to be black, Dutch, or white.
