The history of the Jersey Devil goes back to the eighteenth century. A woman named Deborah Smith came from England to New Caesars. In Pine Barrens, she married a man named Lord Leeds and began what would become a large family.
The thirteenth born is hailed as a devil. The story of how Leeds came to beget thirteen children varies. In one version, it is said that Mr. Leeds was a rich and unusual man who wanted several heirs to continue the family name. In another version, Mr. Leeds is a drunkard who does not provide well for his wife and twelve children. In each version, however, it is clear that Lady Ducit is tired of giving birth to children and, knowing that the thirteenth is coming, she sets the wheels of the curse in motion by saying: “May the devil be here.”
Mrs. Leeds was going to pray a few months later on a stormy night. After giving birth the child seemed to be healthy, the baby began to grow. it was terrible that the horns began to grow on the children’s heads, as well as hooves, tails, and claws. The story goes that his mother, midwife, father, and siblings began to wail and wail loudly. Some stories say that none survived, which is contradicted by the fact that the descendants of Leeds are still found in New Jersey. Other stories say that some survivors and lived to tell of the horror seen on a stormy night in Jersey that the devil was born.
