The Osceola Turkey

The Osceola turkey is a special bird. This beautiful bird has the ability to survive in some inhospitable regions of America. It can be found in parts of Florida. This makes it very popular with hunters. Hunters with families can send their partner and kids to Disney while checking out some public turkey land.

In Florida you will find two sub-species of the Eastern wild turkey and the Osceola. The eastern turkey is the most common turkey in America, the Osceola is the rarest. There are between 80,000 miles and 100,000 Osceola turkeys. Nationwide, there are over 5 million Orientals, 1 million Rio Grandes, 650,000 Goulds (mostly in Mexico) and 300,000 Merriams. Osceola’s small number does not mean they are endangered. For in places they are numerous. Herd sizes change with the seasons and can vary greatly.

Osceola is smaller than the Eastern Turkey. Its colors are similar, but the feathers are darker with a subpale color. The whites on the feathers are broken and thin. The black bars are more prevalent. Not even a bar model. There are less red and green patches than in the east. The colors in the turkey hen are duller than the male species.

On the other side of the road you will find the Osceola marshes, stands of oaks, palmettos, pine forests and open fields. They like to perch on tall trees with straight, horizontal branches. Mature pine and cypress are perfect because of the long distance between the ground and the lower branches. When the choice is the will over the water. Predators will keep this up and help.

The mating season is in the spring. During this time of year it is common to see males roaming around. The males separate from each other. then they inflate their wings. They try to attract women to them. Dominant Tom is trying to do everything. It is often a joke.

Spring is the time of year most Osceola hunters are looking for turkeys. The season is but it flees with the deer season. Most of the turkeys were killed by accident in the fall. True turkeys are vocal. Any type of turkey call will work on the range. Most people use a shotgun. A good place would be erected in the flat oak or between the area and the field. Turkeys have excellent vision. They remove even the slightest movement. Full body camouflage between the gloves and the face mask is necessary to play them.
