Tom Selleck to Replace James Caan on NBC’s Vegas

According to reports by Reuters (reuters.com) Tom Selleck will be joining NBC’s dramatatic television series, “Vegas”.

Selleck is being brought into the series as a new character, the new owner of the Montecito Resort & Casino. His character would replace James Caan, who has departed from the successful series.

Tom Selleck’s character would be a smart, powerful, fun loving leading man at the casino where money flows freely and the people are all pretty.

Vegas is set in a large casino, in Las Vegas, and tells the often improbable stories of the lives of the casino employees, amidst the glamor, money, beautiful girls, and handsome men. The setting is colorful and loud, with gamblers and the staff who caters to the big money gamblers at the casino. The staff and guest throw away astounding amounts of money on high living, champagne, limousines, private airplanes, and gambling. There is ofter great musical entertainment featured on the show, brought in as musical entertainment brought in to the casino.

The show has been renewed for it’s fifth season. James Caan and co star Nikki Cox have left the series amid budget cuts that the renewal of the program was contingent upon.

James Caan played the head of the surveillance team in the glitzy show. The surveillance team at the Montecito has been state of the art, and Caan’s character was ultra smart, with a past as a government agent that seems to give him the upper hand when dealing with crooks and swindlers who populate the casino. Caan’s character always seemed to be several steps ahead of everyone else in the show. The surveillance story lines were always interesting, showing some of the possible inner workings of a casino.

Nikki Cox, who is leaving the series, played Mary, the beautiful concierge at the Montecito Casino..

Josh Duhame, Molly Sims, James Lesure and Vanessa Marcil form the rest of the cast of the program, which is set in a casino in Las Vegas, according to Reuters (reuters.com).

This is Selleck’s first regular television role since Magnum, PI, which ran on CBS and ended after eight seasons in 1988. He has since had recurring roles on “Friends” and on “Boston Legal”. Selleck has also had successful movie roles with “Stone Cold”, Jesse Stone: Sea Change” and is a part of the voice cast for the Walt Disney animated feature “Meet the Robinsons. Selleck has a role in the 1987 film “Three Men and a Baby” and in the 1990 sequel “Three Men and a Little Lady.” His other credits include “Ike: Countdown to D’Day”, “Crossfire Trail” and “Monte Walsh.”

Vegas” is from NBC Universal TV Studio and Dreamworks TV.

The final episode for season four ended with the Montecito exploding in flame and smoke, according to the Las Vegas website (nbc/com,Las_Vegas).

Selleck, with his tall 6’4″ frame and trademark mustache, should be a great addition to the polished looking cast of Las Vegas. Although the the character left by James Caan will be missed from the show, Selleck can bring a different dynamic and personality to the series. Selleck is enjoyable to watch and should fit in well with the cast.
