Top 10 Fads of the Past Decade

Fads and trends come and go, some repeat themselves, and some fade off into the background for good. Who doesn’t remember parachute pants and neon leggings? Those are a few fads I am glad have disappeared. I have put together a list of the Top 10 Fads of the past decade. There has been so many to choose from, but these are the ten that I have really noticed become widely popular throughout the past ten years.

1. Social Networking Web Sites

There is no denying that social networking websites such as Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter have become such a large part of our everyday lives. They have become a way to keep in contact with old friends, make new friends, and even finding love. Sites like Facebook & Twitter allow our friends to keep updated with what we are doing at all times. These sites are addicting, I find myself checking up on Facebook and Twitter more than a few times a day. This is one of the most popular fads of the past decade, and it looks like it wont be going anywhere soon. Every month Face book and Twitter are advancing and coming out with new and better applications and updates, I see the Social Networking fad getting even bigger as we approach this new decade..

2. Cougars

The definition of a cougar is an older woman on the prowl for a younger guy. Older men have been dating younger women for ages, and its about time older women caught onto this as well. It has become such a popular trend that even some bars are starting to host cougar nights designed specifically to allow older women to meet younger men. Even Hollywood has caught onto this trend, with such shows as “Cougar Town” starring Courtney Cox, and “The Cougar” a reality dating show starring an older, successful woman dating younger boy toys. This is definitely a fad that proves what men can do, women can do it bigger and better.

3. Men In Skinny Jeans

This is a fad I know 98% of us women hope and pray disappears forever. Nobody wants to date a guy whose jeans are tighter than ours! Also, it showing us way more than we want to see. Personally, when I wear jeans that are too tight, its painful and uncomfortable! I can only imagine how guys must feel in them. So please, if your one of the men guilty of following this fad, make it your new years resolution to hang up those God awful skinny jeans once and for all.

4. Uggs & North Face Jackets

If you go to any high school or college in the USA, it is most likely you will see hundreds of girls wearing almost the exact same uniform; Ugg boots and North Face Jackets. If I had a nickel for every young girl I have seen wearing this exact same outfit, I wouldn’t be writing this article right now. I would be sipping Corona’s on a private island because I would be rich. I really hope young girls learn to be comfortable in their own skin and not be afraid to develop their own personal style instead of following every other girls definition of what is cool to wear, like a mindless zombie. I hope the new fad this next decade is young girls breaking out of the norm, and developing their own individual, unique styles. And not be afraid to be break out of the mold, and be who you are and not be ashamed of it!

5. Bob Haircuts

Thanks to such stars as Posh spice (Victoria Beckham) , Katie Holmes, and Rihanna, the bob has made a huge comeback. As a hairstylist, I can even begin to tell you how many clients I have had come in and chop off all their long locks to sport an a-symmetrical bob a’la Posh & Rihanna. It is a cute and simple haircut, but you must have a certain hair type in order for it to work. You must either have thick, straight hair, or a lot of fine straight hair.. If your hair is wavy or curly, you must be okay with either round brushing or flat ironing it on a daily basis. This is a cute fad that I would not mind seeing stick around for just a little bit longer.

6. I-Gadgets

This fad would include I Phones, IPODS, Ipod touch and Itunes. This has been a huge craze over the past few years especially when Apple and AT&T; came out with the IPhone. By now, most people you see either own an Iphone, or an Ipod, and who can blame them? As an avid music lover, I cannot imagine life without my Ipod Nano. It is so east to download music onto it, and it is so small and convenient to carry around. The Iphone is also an awesome product with all of its fun applications and easy access, I predict myself becoming an owner of this phone very soon. I am thrilled to see what new gadgets Apple creates this next decade!

7. The Emo Generation

I don’t mean to offend anyone who reads this article, so if you consider yourself “Emo”, maybe you should stop reading now. Okay, I warned you! This fad needs to die off fast. I am tired of seeing obnoxious teenagers with bad dye jobs, too much eyeliner, skinny jeans and twilight shirts. This is not a cute look, nor has it ever been. Since when has it been cool to be an emotional wreck all the time, and constantly discussing and documenting your feelings day in and day out. Your young for Gods sake! Enjoy life while you still can!! I miss the fresh faced happy teenagers who enjoyed attending football games, movies and having fun with their friends. Now days, we have a bunch of teenagers who are pissed off at the world. These kids haven’t experienced enough in life, yet they think they know it all and that everyone is out to get them. Please, get a life and get rid of that stupid eyeliner and bad haircuts! I hope this fad fades off throughout this next decade.

8. Wii

I am absolutely loving this fad! I am so excited for this new generation of video games that are actually keeping kids active. I love the Wii and the Wii Fit is my new favorite. It makes working out so much fun. This is such a great concept as we have so many American children and adults who struggle with obesity. Exercise is a good thing to instill in our children, and what better way to do it than with a game. From skateboarding to hula hoop, Wii Fit offers a wide variety of fun games to keep you active and fit without even realizing it. I cant wait to see what new games Nintendo Wii comes out with this next decade!

9. Reality Dating Shows

You know it’s a sad day when people are trying to make a name for themselves by pretending to be in love with someone (after 2 dates) on a reality show. Shame on these fame whores who go on this show and use it to further their careers. Also, shame on the men/women who come on these shows to find love. They cannot be serious about it, otherwise they would be trying to find love in real places and in private. I feel as if reality shows have gotten out of hand, now we have the same people appearing on different reality shows. We are beginning to recycle reality stars! This fad has got to go. Many of these so called reality shows are staged anyways.

10. Blogging

Blogging has become a huge new trend in the last decade. People log on and write about their daily lives, its like an online diary you are allowing the world to read. It has become so popular that even celebrities are jumping on board. Like Gwyneth Paltrow with her online blog “Goop”. It also jump started some into fame such as celebrity blogger Perez Hilton of Perezxhilton.com. This has become a new, fun hobby and creative outlet for many people. This is a trend that I have a feeling will continue throughout the next decade.

These are my picks for the top 10 fads of the past decade. Some we want to see vanish, with the new year, and some we hope only get better. However, one thing we can count on is that with 2010 approaching fast, there are sure to be many more crazy fads and trends coming our way.
