There have been so many romantic comedies from 2000 to 2009, it was a lot more difficult to only pick 10 than I had originally expected. We all know what a romantic comedy is; they are light hearted, funny, and are based around two or more characters falling in and out of love. Theses are my top 10 romantic comedies of the decade.
Number 10: Bridget Jones Diary ( 2001)- Renee Zellweger, Colin Firth, and Hugh Grant are in a somewhat love triangle. Bridget is trying to find love while improving her imperfections and she keeps all her thoughts and goals in her diary.
Number 9: Just Like Heaven (2005)- Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo star in this one. Elizabeth is a doctor and really doesn’t have a love life or really even a life outside of work. Well Elizabeth gets into a car accident and goes into a coma. While she is in a coma her condo/ residence is leased out to this architect (David) who then starts seeing her spirit. Well he then helps Elizabeth figure out who she is and what has happened to her. And the story evolves into romances and relationships.
Number 8: Love Actually (2003)- There are a lot of big names in this film; Hugh Grant, Kiera Knightley, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, and Liam Neeson. This movie is about 8 or so different peoples lives or stories and as it goes on all of the people are sort of wrapped up together. It’s about love, relationships, family, friends, and society. It is a very good and unique romantic comedy.
Number 7: Two Weeks Notice (2002)- Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant star in this film. Sandra plays a woman who is an environmental activist who protests a lot against tearing down local landmarks. Well she tries to convince Grant’s character who is a billionaire not to tear down a specific building. Well he then hires her to work for him and the story evolves from there. The two portray to have a love hate relationship, and are a very good pair acting together.
Number 6: Sweet Home Alabama ( 2002)- Reese Witherspoon, Josh Lucas, and Patrick Dempsey play in this one. Witherspoon’s character is so cute and southern, she is great in this movie. It’s about a girl ,Melanie, who moves to New York and becomes this big name clothes designer and falls in love with this man (Dempsey’s character) who is a politician’s son. Well Melanie’s life is going perfectly until she remembers that her husband that she was married to in Alabama has not signed all the divorce papers from 5 years ago. So she has to go back to where she has grown up and the story evolves from there.
Number 5: How to Lose a Guys in Ten Days ( 2003)- Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson play good roles in this one. The movie is about both these characters sort of trying to better their careers, but in the gambling way. Matthew’s character is a player and bets that he can make any woman fall in love with him, while Hudson’s character bets that she can run this guy off. Well the story evolves from there with the two characters.
Number 4: The Ugly Truth (2009)- Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler play very good roles in this movie. Heigl’s character is the producer for a morning show and the show is not very popular so her boss is looking for a little more excitement. Well that is where Butler’s character comes in as a prior late night talk show host who is somewhat vulgar and crude. Well the two don’t really hit it off at first, but then he offers to help her with her love life. The characters evolve from here and become a good team.
Number 3: Music and Lyrics (2007)- Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant star in this comedy, and work really well together. Grant’s character is a washed up pop singer and Barrymore’s character is this sort of eccentric woman. Fletcher (Grant) gets this opportunity to write a song for a teen idol, but is having problems finding the right lyrics. Well he believes that Fisher (Barrymore) is the person to help him. The movie takes off from there with the two characters learning and developing from each other.
Number 2: Fool’s Gold (2008)- Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson play great roles with each other again in this movie. Finnegan (Matthew) is a deep sea treasure hunter and Tess (Hudson) is married to him and is not really sure why. Finnegan thinks that he has found a huge treasure and is trying to get out of debt while Tess just wants a divorce. The story evolves from there with the two of them having help try to find this lost historical treasure.
Number 1: The Proposal (2009): Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock are just so complimentary in this hilarious movie. Reynold’s character is pretty much Bullock’s slave as her assistant at a publishing agency. Well Bullock finds out that she is about to get deported back to Canada until she tells her bosses that she is getting married to Ryan’s character. Then Reynold’s character is suppose to be going home for his grandma’s b-day, so Bullock goes to try and convince Ryan to get married. The story then takes off with the two characters being very funny, awkward, and romantic.
