Top 5 Mummy Themed Decorating Ideas

Are you working on planning a mummy themed party for Halloween? Have you decided on all of your mummy-rific decorations yet? If not, you may want to take a moment to read my list of mummy inspired party decorations. Here it is:

Mummy Sarcophagus

Let’s face it. You can’t have a mummy themed party without a mummy sarcophagus. After all, our linen loving friends need a place to unwind at the end of the night right? One of the most inexpensive ways to make a mummy sarcophagus is to construct one out of poster board or foam board. I’d suggest that you consider going with the foam board because it tends to hold up better over time. If you have never made a mummy sarcophagus before, there are explicit instructions on how to get the job done available on the Museum of Unnatural History’s website.

Life Size Mummy

Once you have your mummy sarcophagus built, you are going to need a few mummies to go along with it. I’d suggest that you start out by building or purchasing a life size mummy. If you are feeling crafty and have a few hours to spare, you may want to check out the Better Homes and Gardens’ website. It features an excellent post on how to make a life size mummy using muslin, plywood and a wig form. Of course if you’d rather not bust out the power tools, you could always purchase a mummy or two through party supply and theatrical shops. Oriental Trading typically sells a 43 inch long hanging mummy for $16. If you want your mummy to have a few four-legged friends, the company also sells 12 inch tall mummy cats and 9 inch mummy rats

Mummy Window Posters

Do you want to greet your party guests in style? If so, you may want to consider covering your front windows with mummy window posters. The posters are translucent and come with an adhesive backing. I like them because the posters make it look as if a mummy is peering out your windows. You can usually purchase mummy window posters through party supply shops, like Halloween Express, for $20 a set.

Scarab Beetles

What goes hand in hand with mummies and a mummy sarcophagus? Why scarab beetles of course! There are multiple retailers that sell ready-made scarab beetles. One of them is Jamali Garden. It sells charming, blue scarab beetle ornaments for $7 each. The Royal Ontario Museum also sells 2 inch long, wooden scarab beetle paper weights that would look great converted into napkin rings or placed onto your guests’ tables. To convert the scarab beetles into napkin rings, simply hot glue a piece of tea stained muslin to the backs of the paper weights and then tie it around your napkin and silverware rolls.

Egyptian Hieroglyphics

In my experience, Egyptian Hieroglyphics on faux rolled papyrus and tea stained muslin would make superior wall and table decorations as well. There are multiple websites that offer images of well known, Egyptian Hieroglyphics that you can use to create your mummy themed decorations. One of my favorite is Jim Loy’s website. It contains in-depth information on Egyptian Hieroglyphics and other mummy related stuff that you may find helpful when planning your mummy themed party.
