10,000 maniacs 10 best songs This band was formed in the early 1980’s and featured the rapturous voice of Natalie Merchant. They went through numerous member and name changes before finally recording their debut album in 1983. The name 10,000 Maniacs came from a B-rated horror picture called 2,000 Maniacs. It would be a decade later when Natalie Merchant would leave the group to strike out on her own. Her stunning vocals are easily recognized in most of 10,000 Maniacs songs. The group created their own version of “jangle pop” which was popularized in the 1960’s by the Byrds.
The group reached a peak in the late 1980’s with their two best albums, “In My Tribe” and “Blind Man’s Zoo.” These efforts were more rock oriented but were still distinctly 10,000 Maniac material. While never a strong charting group, they developed a devoted following. The group’s videos were a favorite MTV feature and they produced an MTV Unplugged album in 1993. 10,000 Maniacs managed to stay together after Merchant left the band. She was replaced by Mary Ramsey who was featured on two albums in the later 1990’s.
This was another of the off-center, non-mainstream acts that assembled a fine collection of tunes. They were often ignored by head-in-the-sand mainstream radio. But their music was refreshing as well as stimulating. Natalie Merchant certainly was the driving force behind 10,000 Maniacs. She also released several CD’s in the 1990’s that were unmistakably “Natalie”. She is a great talent whose tantalizing vocals distinguished her among many female artists. There’s hardly any song by 10,000 Maniacs that I don’t thoroughly enjoy.
10. Tension. This was one of the bands earliest songs. It set the tone for future Natalie Merchant featured material. Forceful and complicated with rebellious lyrics.
9. You Happy Puppet. Masterful lyrics. This tune is creative and radiates around the super-sweet vocals of Natalie Merchant. An easy-flowing methodical song.
8. Eat For Two. This song is vibrant and airy; even though it is about being pregnant. Has catchy, polished rhythms and guitars. High energy in the classic Maniac style.
7. Don’t Talk. This penetrating tune typifies the high profile guitar presence that marks many Maniac songs. Natalie is as forceful as ever in this alluring number.
6. More Than This. A pleasant remake of the classic Roxy Music hit song. One of their more recognized tunes. With easy lyrics and chorus lines, it is more on the moderate side of 10,000 Maniac music. From 1997 featuring Mary Ramsey, a splendid singer in her own right.
5. Hey Jack Kerouac. What a masterful and energetic tale. It is about the famous novelist who was part of the “beat generation.” Jack Kerouac died at the age of 47, presumably from complications resulting from alcoholism. A stirring and energy filled tune with Merchant leading the way. Great beat and rhythm.
4. What’s The Matter Here. This is an excellent tune; again dominated by the tantalizing singing of Natalie Merchant. The live version of this song is also very well performed and energizing. A very catchy song with good flow and melodic guitar work. The lyrics are talking about child abuse down on Morgan street. But it could be on any street in any town.
3. These Are The Days. Perhaps the group’s most noted song. From 1992, it is an easy, soft-rock song. Pure and simple, complete with good vocals and harmonies. A little more mainstream than the usual 10,000 Maniacs tune. This is a great song to wile away the time listening to.
2. Trouble Me. Simply a marvelous song that is soul stirring. Excellent lyrics and vocals. Worthy of best song of the 80’s. Vibrant color and energy right from the first few bars. Great background vocals and guitar work so prominent in Maniac compositions. For me, a near perfect song that is direct and captivating.
1. Like The Weather. This could be my favorite song of all-time. It is that powerful for me. The energy that this song emanates is remarkable. Fantastic guitars, organ, and drums. Fresh and lively with Merchant completely in control. Every time I hear this tune , I like it more than before. It is one of those listening experiences that goes beyond normal explanations. Excellent lyrics and design. For me, so down to earth and beautifully outrageous all at the same time.
10,000 Maniacs performed sporadically during the period between 2001-2005. But recently in 2006, they have managed to schedule several concert dates. The band’s last release was in 2004 with the “Campfire Songs” CD. This is one of the few artists I can listen to and not want to skip the undesirable songs. There is no doubt that Natalie Merchant made this group such an attractive act. There is something about this music that communicates with the heart and soul.
