Translating the Slogans of Alcoholics Anonymous

Certain words are the rules in AA cells, and there are those that are not spoken as often as they used to be, but are still just as important;

It’s easy – This means that when it comes to your time, you’re not getting caught up in the rush of work, whether it’s driving or overwhelming you with too many tasks.

Think, think, think – This translates into thinking the drink through before you take it for a relapse.

But for the grace of God – People in recovery often use this phrase when they talk about members who “go out” and drink, that is “by the grace of God go.”

One Day at a Time – Newcomers often mention that they have to remember that they only have to stay sober for 24 hours each day.

Let go and let God – This sentence belongs to the third degree and the prayer that it carries with it, which means that a higher power is taking care of your life.

This too shall pass – Meaning whatever is the crisis at the moment, it will eventually pass.

Expect miracles – This companionship with God has no limits.

I can’t, I can, I think – Alcoholics link these with steps 1-3 in the text Alcoholics Anonymous.

If it works, don’t fix it – Like the old New Coke/Classic Coke battle, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” If something you are doing in your life is working, don’t stop doing it.

Keep Going Back, Work If Needed – Meetings are coming back. the program works if you follow the steps.

Stick with the Victors – Not those in a relapse mode or those who don’t really want to be sober, but people who use it in terms of money; etc.

Sobriety is a journey, not a destination – enjoy the journey and stay in the now.

Faith without works is dead – Even the most holy man can have all the knowledge in the world, but if he does not practice his faith in a higher virtue in his daily life, he will not do any good.

Miserable me, miserable me, pour me another drink – Translation: Let him not fall back into self-pity.

To Be True to Yourself – Written in all AA gear, which features various points of sobriety. It means that sobriety is important in order to be healthy.

I came, I came, I believed – This refers to meetings, coming out of the fog, and believing in a higher power.

Live in the now — Stay in the moment and don’t project into the future.

If God seems far away, who moves? – These are related to you, to receive the power and not to let the higher power guide you.

Turn – Let us pass to the higher power, whether the judgment is the duty of divorce; etc.

There are tons more emblems, of course, and they can be found at http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/Spa/2973/index11.html.
