Unique Teen Volunteer Opportunities

Most enthusiastic programs call for young people to volunteer for community service hours. The state of Florida has a lottery sponsored scholarship called Bright Future. The 100 percent scholarship requires that the youth maintain a 3.5 grade point average and offer a minimum of 100 hours. Letters cover 100 percent of tuition and books.

As a Mother of 15 years, hoping to have a bright future Scholarship I run into some obstacles looking for opportunities to find volunteers. Most places either have deductibles or will not accept time restrictions. Some will even volunteer a teen while they are directly in charge, but the volunteer site said they don’t have staff to offer. Most scholars will not accept the doctrines related to ecclesiastical interests if it is directly related to the testimony or the gospel. The following are some creative ideas where our youth can offer and if the limits are crossed.

1) About the Democratic and Republican offices in your counties. Maybe the elections are over, but many of these services are fully staffed and still need help making phone calls or sending. e-mail I called the local office in the small county we live in and the only restrictions are that they have odd hours and we want to work voluntary hours. Check and check with the Democratic or Republican Headquarters in your community.

2) Ronald McDonald House. Most major communities or cities with special children hospitals have Ronald McDonald houses. Jacksonville is located near the Children’s Clinic and Baptist Children’s Hospital; This is probably one of the places my daughter will end up volunteering. The director of the house in Jacksonville informed me that the young man could volunteer in many places, according to their interests. He stated that he had one young man who loved to cook and offered to cook food for his family. My daughter is interested in working directly with the children, perhaps babysitting or just entertaining them.

3) Recycling Centers. Near our small county is a waste water and recycling center called New River Region. They are always looking for volunteers and are happy to help the youth. I have worked with them before in the clean streams of both St. Mary’s and Stl. Johns River in Jacksonville. At one river cleanup event, the young man also received t-shirts and later made a cook.

4) Your site password. Tully accepts youth volunteers from two different age groups at the zoo. They have volunteers aged 12 – 14, who are very strictly limited, and 15 and older youth. Young visitors usually help in the education center or work in petting zoos. Do not be afraid that they will have to feed the steak to the pregnant lions.

5) The financial world. This is a church volunteering opportunities supported by the Baptist Convention. A teenager does not have to be a Baptist like some other young people. There are various locations across the United, sponsored and organized by local churches where the work is done. Young people are usually involved in painting houses, roofing or landscaping. My daughter has gone two years in a row and can request paint or paint a house. While the church is being held, the hours are not counted as witnesses. Of the 30 hours spent volunteering per week, my daughter stated that only about two hours were spent witnessing and passing flyers.

Perhaps these ideas will give you an opportunity to increase your child’s volunteering opportunities. Our youth has more than the ability to offer. Besides, a free scholarship or two aren’t bad deals for their hard work.
