Vacation Activities in Memphis: Never Leave Downtown for Fun

Downtown Memphis is full of entertainment and cultural experiences. You don’t have to ever leave the downtown area to have fun on vacation in Memphis.

We have many forms of entertainment in Memphis. For family fun we have AutoZone Park where the Memphis Red Birds play. The park offers tours of its facilities to adults and children over four years of age for $4 and to seniors and children under four for $3. However, prices are subject to change. Whether it’s baseball or basketball season, you can catch a game. The Memphis Grizzlies are our own NBA team. Tickets to either team’s games can be purchased for about $5 if you’re willing to sit in the nosebleed section of the FedEx Forum or the grass at AutoZone Park.

Go to the Fire Museum of Memphis at 118 Adams Avenue in beautiful downtown Memphis. Here you can see artifacts, photos, and stories of the most devastating fires in Memphis history. Admission is $6 or less. Check out the Cotton Museum at the Memphis Cotton Exchange, where admission is $5 or less. The Cotton Museum is located at 65 Union Avenue, also in beautiful downtown Memphis, Tennessee. There you will find evidence of a secretive and shady society of Cotton folk in the history of the city of Memphis.

If you like music, go to the Soulsville: Stax Museum of American Soul located at 926 East McLemore on the south side of downtown Memphis in a neighborhood known as Soulsville. See exhibits of historical artifacts of the Soul movement in the building where artists like Aretha Franklin and Al Green recorded hits. At the Rock and Soul Museum of Memphis, you can see artifacts that tell the story of how rock and soul music came to be. Memphis has a rich history of music, and these two museums are both located in the downtown area. Sun Studios is another place to go check out the fantastic history of music. Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and Carl Perkins all recorded there, and visitors can still record an album for a small fee. Sun Studios is located at 706 Union Avenue in downtown Memphis.
The South Main Arts District covers the south end of Main Street and has a variety of cool new art galleries and hip shops. These are just a few of the fantastic cultural experiences you can have on a budget in Memphis.

What to eat? Check out some places to eat in the downtown Memphis area. The Arcade at South Main and G.E. Patterson across the street from the Amtrak station is the oldest restaurant in Memphis. With plenty of great places to eat, like the Green Beetle, a home style cooking café, you can eat delicious food on a budget. There is also Westy’s, on the north end of Main Street. Westy’s has a huge menu that can serve anyone anything from pasta to rice to fudge pie. Westy’s is open until 3 a.m. so if you’ve been out enjoying all the music, you can eat here late into the evening and get a fantastic meal.

The night life in downtown Memphis offers blues and rock and roll music. You can find all of these on or near Beale Street. A couple of great clubs here are BB King’s on Beale and Hollywood Raifford’s a few blocks south of Beale off Main Street.
