War Horse Opens at Denver’s Buell Theatre

It has been hailed by The New York Times as “theatrical magic” and by the New York Daily News as “spellbinding” and I after viewing Denver’s opening night of War Horse, I will agree!

The Storyline
Adapted from Michael Morpurgo’s book, War Horse is a powerful story about the relationship between a young boy, Albert, and his beloved horse, Joey. After Albert’s father promised him that he could keep his beloved horse, his father sales Joey to the English army as an officer’s horse and is taken away to France during World War I. Distraught, Albert runs away to enlist so that he might find his Joey. What follows is a wonderful tale of courage, loyalty and friendship.

What makes War Horse special?
To watch Joey on stage is breathtaking! The horse is actually a handmade 120lb puppet standing almost 8 feet tall and just under 10 feet long. Watching Joey on stage and simply magical as he comes to life with three puppeteer’s managing his every movement.

It is so easy to fall in love with this beautiful horse, just as Albert does and emotions are easily stirred as Joey (taken to war) suffers through battles, harsh treatment and a near fatal wounding. It is easy to see why War Horse has received so many Tony Awards including Best Play!
