First time parents and parents of multiples alike all know how gas and your newborn are never something that is easy to overcome. It seems that little babies more and more are having a lot of problems with their digestive systems which makes being a parent a little bit harder everyday and every feeding for that matter. Gas not only makes your baby very upset, but it can lead to even more difficult problems if your baby is not eating enough because of the gas. Gas is one of the top problems that doctors and pediatricians see everyday since parents usually do not know what the problem is. All they have to go by is their crying newborn baby and the fact that their little newborn baby will not eat any of the milk in his or her bottle. Doctor’s will tell the new parents that when you see your baby this upset and showing that they are not hungry the problem usually always is gas. As a first time parent this is not something you want to hear since you never know what to do if you come face to face with this particular problem. There is no real need to worry though, as long as you have the right tools and steps you and your baby both can get through the gas and have much better feeding days in the future. What to do and the steps to take when your newborn has an issue with gas are listed below.
Step Number One:
Understanding why babies get gas. Since your newborn is so fresh to the world it is very common that he or she gets gas when they feed. Not only do babies get gas from breast milk but they also get gas from bottle feeding. Once your baby gets gas once you will probably see this problem more often than you would like to. Newborn babies have a problem digesting their food at first since their digestive tract has not fully developed. A sure way to know that your little one is suffering from gas is to see that he or she is crying excessively and he or she is refusing to take anything to eat. Newborn babies should eat every three or four hours, maybe even more than that depending on the size and shape of your baby, so when you see that he or she has not eaten in more than six hours you know that you have a problem that needs to be fixed as soon as possible. If you do not know if your baby is in fact suffering from gas you might want to consider taking him or her to their doctor so they can give you a final answer.
Step Number Two:
Burp your baby. This step always seems like the obvious but sometimes parents forget that when they have gas it always feels better to have a good burp. The same goes for little babies. Since babies do not know how to burp on their own, they rely on their new parents to burp them and make them immediately feel so much better. The best way to burp your newborn baby to get rid of his gas is to keep him or her in an upright position while you burp them so less air enters the body making it easier for the baby to get the excess gas out.
Step Number Three:
Try gas relief medicine made for newborn babies. Before you give your little one any type of medicine you should always check with your doctor. As soon as you know that medicine is OK to give you might want to give your little one some gas relief medication. Always make sure and check if the medicine an be given to newborn babies. If you have any doubt in your mind that the medicine should not be used on babies then you should never use it. As soon as the medicine is given you should always monitor your newborn carefully to make sure that the medicine was OK for your little one’s body.
Lastly,
If you come into any more problems you can always ask your doctor for help. Your doctor should be able to help you with any problems that you and your baby have especially if you feel that your baby has gas that you can not get rid of.
