The Little Theatre has been offering top quality Broadway like shows since 1957. It was founded by Guy S. Little Jr. and is the only professional theatre between Chicago, and St. Louis. The first show that opened at the theatre in 1957 was “Brigadoon,” that starred Ronald Rogers. He also starred in “Guys and Dolls.” In 1958, Andrea Blayne starred in the “King and I.” Through 1978, the Theatre was a commercial venture that had over 175 famous actors and actresses who played in the shows such as Mickey Rooney, Ann Miller, John Carradine, Betty Grable, and Forrest Tucker. In 1981, the Theatre ran as a non-profit corporation.
This year, the Little Theatre on the Square will be celebrating it’s 49th anniversary. Just two years ago, the theatre went under renovations that expanded the theatre to make more room for customers an enlarged the stage for bigger productions. Last year some of the shows that played included “The Full Monty,” “Godspell,” and “A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline.”
During the summer, the theatre offers the famous children’s theatre and offers top quality shows that are made for young audiences. Some of the shows that were put on in past summers include the Wizard of Oz, Charlotte’s Web, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Families can pay 8.00 per tickets during the summer season or pay for an entire season pass for $21. For the regular seasons, those who wish to attend shows can pay for matinee subscriptions and evening subscriptions at the box office. Subscriptions begin at $110.
Shows that will be playing soon include “HairSpray,” “My Fair Lady,” and “The Sound of Music.” The Little Theatre on the Square is home for families and children of all kind. Recently in 2004, the Little Theatre began a new program called, “Adopt a Seat.” For those who wish to donate $1,000 to the theater for their operating budget, patrons can have their name on the seating chart plaque located in the lobby of the Little Theatre. Donators can make the donation over a 3 year period, and can have their names on the chart as a sacred memory to have forever.
